I find the bog-standard, red ATI cards a little humorous. Though I'm easily amused :o

Indeed, $10K for a couple of old ATI boards operating on an AGP 1x... a steal indeed :-)

Let's have a look at the future of IRIX and compare that to a general commercial value of used SGI/MIPS systems... no surprise there.

As far as I can see time is on our side for a short while.

Wow. Three words got contrived into a commentary on the value of SGI equipment. I didn't even indicate tone. You guys are too much.

That doesn't change that it is a beauty, does it?

Albeit it's a bit overpriced for home use... but that's just asking myself and my IT budget.

Used IT equipment is an amazing bargin if you look at it in terms of original list price. You get get an Origin 2000 rack for under $500 - the new price would be 1000 times more... Imagine buying a 10 year old Porsche for $100 - one that still works and has been looked after :)
Of course we all here stories that people have paid $1000 for a 5 MB ESDI drive but normal IT equipment is pretty much zero-value (commercial) after 5 years.
People do make a living selling older IT bits but the biggest (per volume) deals would be hobbist deals.
We are lucky people - for a few $$$ we can be owners of million dollar hardware :D

I wasn't making a comment on the value of the machine. I'd never seen the ATI cards exposed like that and was just a little surprised at how ordinary looking they were. The chassis/rack is definitely nice.

:P I don't think we were referring to your words but the price of the system itself.

I'd love to get a closer look at one of those ATIs. How custom are they? Just a FireGL series card with a MIPS POSTing BIOS or something completely different?

Might even be bog-standard ATis, with MIPS firmware on the IP35. That's similar to how DEC did it, and some Sun cards.
