Price check: SUN N218(?)

It looks like there will be a largish SUN server up for auction this weekend. There is a good chance that I will go up there to grab the challenge they are also selling (which I intend to part out). If so, I was thinking of getting the SUN as well, if someone on Nekochan would want it.

Looks like an E450.

Alas, shipping costs to here would be immense.

Probably. My guess is that I would end up parting it out and tossing the case :(. Keep in mind that it probably does not have a hard drive and there is a good chance that the drive sled is missing.

Not to mention the purple key.

That's probably the Challenge, Wolves mentioned.

I agree that it looks like an E450. Those things weigh at least 150lbs.

Definitely an E450, the E250's bigger brother. Behind the door there's the SCSI backplane where you insert up to 20 SCA disks. It's a heavy machine that can be fitted with up to 4 USII processors. The system board is the same that was used in the Ultra 80.

Well, they lumped the SUN in with the Challenge so I ended up with both of them along with a Personal Earth Station DIU/O.

Here are the specs:

The SUN:
-4 4849-03 2MB UltraSPARC II processors
-16 RAM sticks, unknown size
-No disk drives or sleds
-SYM22801 SCSI card
-ATI 3D Rage II + DVD video card with 13W3 connector and SUN mach64 PCI ROM
- 2 power supplies (and room for a 3rd!)
- The key to turn it on, but not the one to lock the front

The Challenge L:
-4 hard drive trays (no hard drives)
-1 drive cover
-1 CD drive
-1 Memory board, 030-0604-106 with 32 32MB RAM sticks, part 030-0256-001
-1 Processor board, 030-1072-001 Rev C, with 4 195MHz (?) R10K processors
-1 Expansion board, 030-0646-106 Rev A ,with:
-VCAM, 030-0500-206
-3 SCSI risers + 1 built in SCSI port
-SCSI card, 030-0242-006, with 3 SCSI ports
-FDDI-MESS card, 030-0579-004 Rev B
-2 FDDI ports, ASSY 030-0582-002 Rev D

I am planning on selling or parting out all of the above stuff. I would be happy to sell them as a complete unit but the shipping would be over $500 so I expect that I will just sell the parts. There is already someone that gets first call on the challenge, but they may not take it all. If you have a good idea what the parts are worth please let me know.

Sun made the E450 in a "workstation" version called the Ultra450. If so, the model number would be A20 rather than the A25 used for the server version. The Ultra450 is a slightly rarer model <so it might be worth slightly more  >. The only <original> config I'm aware of shipped with 300MHz processors - which is what 4849s should be.

I had an E450 for a while, it probably didn't use any more power or decibels than an O2K deskside  The drive array backplane was nice, no need for an external array. If you like any of the OSs that will run on it, it'd make a decent workstation <up to 20 hard drives and *10* PCI slots>.

*If* it's original stuff <and an Ultra450>:
501-2622 = 32MB
501-2480 = 64MB
501-3136 = 128MB
501-4743 = 256MB

Having been unable to find any model number I can neither confirm nor deny the model of the Sun. It is nice if it is the slightly more expensive model but I doubt that anyone will pay to ship it even so.

I listed the PES on ebay so now is your chance to have your very own Personal Earth Station. They can probably be used in place of milk crates to prop up boards in order to construct a book case and have the added advantage of being legal!
