Tandem re-badged Challenge L Deskside

Unread postby pierocks » Wed May 16, 2018 9:17 pm

Well, I’m a little too excited to wait until I have anything substantiative to post. I went and picked up a Tandem re-badged Challenge L deskside tonight. I have no idea what condition it is in electronically, but cosmetically it is all there and in fairly good shape (nothing a little xylene and armorall can’t fix). I'll be looking back through past threads on turning old systems on for the first time in a long time, etc. If anybody wants to shout advice at me here on pitfalls to look out for, I'd appreciate it greatly.

So in lieu of giving everyone something interesting, such as a hinv or a list of interesting software living on the hard drive, I’ll just give you a picture of the thing in the back of my Highlander with the worlds ugliest comforter as a moving blanket:

Hope it works! Do you know what's inside -- R4K, R8K or R10K CPUs?

Unknown. The person that I picked the system up from was the current guardian of the system (best way I can explain the situation) but was not knowledgable about it. I have neither a power cord (on order) or keys to turn it on at the moment, so it might be a few days until I can get a hinv. Does anybody know where I can source a replacement key for this thing? I have heard rumblings that all these systems had the same keying. Perhaps somebody knows the key codes for it?

The key is for a switch lock from C&K switches, http://www.ckswitches.com. The part# on the key is A126, and Mouser, Digikey etc sell replacement keys. Oh, and you're right, one key fits all.

Well, it didn't take but a couple of days. The urge to open it up and look inside was too strong. There's not a single speck of dust in this thing. It's immaculate. And it looks like I have an 8x150 Mhz R4400 system. I've gotta say...the CPU boards in this thing are extremely impressive looking. They sure don't build 'em like they used to...

Pffff. I have a wife and a kid. I made them come with me to pick this thing up. I even one time made my wife drive from central IL all the way to Minneapolis to pick up an O2000 deskside from Scutboy. She’s a keeper!

pierocks - mine came with me from MN to IL to pick up an E450 and a TRS-80 Model II.

I think we both hit the jackpot! :-)

You guys are lightweights :D We flew from Shanghai to San Mateo on Asiana kerwhomp where Chris from that place I forget the name offered me a bunch of Onyx4's for cheap cheap, but I was too stupid to know that you could easily change them to V12's so didn't take him up on the offer.

Did drag back a pair of O350's tho. And the guy at Customs gave me some trouble ... No sir, nothing to declare as we push the tower of boxes through the green lane. She argued while I sped away :D

In the other direction once, the Octane took up all the checked allowance so the O2 and SW1600 had to go as carryon. You can buy clothes anywhere but SGI's don't grow on trees ... that may be the one you have now, pierocks ? Or parts of it. It's got more miles than a 379 Pete :D
hey friendly ! come outta there ! you're a cheap lousy dirty stinkin' mug and I'm glad what I done !
