O2 and Octane crash when network is connected

Unread postby mitch79 » Sun May 13, 2018 12:51 pm

Hi there!

After 4 years i have powered up my small Octane (single R10k/250) an my O2 (R5k/300).
Both machines have started very well (ok, the 36 GB drive in the Octane needed a slap to wake up), as long there is no other network device (PC, Network Printer, Fridge) on the net.
If the systems are the only one on a switch (i've tried 4 different, including a Bintec RS-120 which was configured to 100 MBit half duplex on that port), it starts up without any error. But if i plug in an other machine, after a few seconds the sgi catches a Kernel Fault (EXC code: 52 "Trap Instruction".

Does anybody have an idea, how to solve this problem?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Are you running any network services

Only the default services and fw_ssh and fw_mysql.
4 years ago everything worked fine :-(

If the machines haven't run in 4 years, my first guess would be to check whether various configurations are still valid and no problems like dead batteries have popped up.
Initially I thought of an invalid system id and an all zero Mac address causing network havoc, but the system id of an O2 is on an eprom on the PCI riser card, and the octane has a NIC (number in a can), so they should survive bottomed out batteries.

What are the Irix versions you are running on either systems? And can you show us the /var/adm/SYSLOG of that trap signal?

Both machines have valid MAC addresses, the Octane runs IRIX 6.6.11m, the O2 rund IRIX 6.5.10m.
They both also have the right date and time.

Because i can't copy and paste the SYSLOG, here is the Screenshot of the O2 SYSLOG:

The SYSLOG on the Octane doesn't contain the trap signal, so here is the screenshot from the crash after plugging in the network cable:

Any ideas?

:?

Anyway, ec0 mode set to override 10mb half? & ec0 debug mode?

How about resetting the env at the prom first.

You may want to take a screen shot of the setting so you can put the boot entries back in.

6.5.11m
i've turned debug mode on today in the hope to get a more detailed error log.

i have resetted the env at the PROM, but the problem is still the same.

Is there a chance to solve the problem by reinstalling IRIX from scratch?

Have you tried disabling via chkconfig all network related services? if it works without network services then you can enable them one by one to trouble shot which one is causing issues.

You might want to upgrade to 6.5.22 if you want to use any nekoware packages.
:Octane: - 1xR12k 400Mhz, 1GB, V8, 18Gb 10K & 36Gb 15K HDD, 6.5.30

I have disabled some services, but not all. I'll try that tomorrow.
The 6.5.25 CDs are already lying on my desk ;-)

But good news: my Indigo R4k is still alive after over 10 years in the basement :D

Good night everyone!

One could also try, booting it up and configuring the network correctly via System Manager from the toolbox and I'd also remove that usr2 mount from /etc/fstab

BTW, I'm really only looking at the o2 to start with.
