SGI Fuel, cannot power on (ALERT: Error probing... timeout)

Unread postby swarm » Thu Mar 08, 2018 2:54 am

Hi everyone,

I finally decided to look at the Fuel I bought many years ago (after replacing all capacitors in SGI 320, this is my last non-working SGI machine). The purchaser told me that the PSU was probably defective.

The machine doesn’t respond on pressing the power button. I tried to short the logic board signal to force the PSU to start. That worked and all fans started to spin, but the front LED showed solid or blinking red (not sure at the moment :(, it was a few weeks ago). Voltage levels looked ok.

Yesterday, I connected a null-modem cable to the internal serial port. The following was repeatedly received when a power cord was plugged in (enter/esc didn’t do anything):

Code: Select all

INFO: Cannot disable power supply: 18
ALERT: Error probing DIMM 0 EEPROM, timeout
ALERT: Error probing DIMM 2 EEPROM, timeout
ALERT: Error probing DIMM 1 EEPROM, timeout
ALERT: Error probing DIMM 3 EEPROM, timeout
ALERT: Error writing the BUS SELECT I/O expander, timeout
ALERT: Error writing the MARGIN CONTROL I/O expander, timeout
ALERT: Error writing the LED0 LOW I/O expander, timeout
ALERT: Error writing the ASIC CONTROL 1 I/O expander, timeout
ALERT: Error writing the ASIC CONTROL 2 I/O expander, timeout
ALERT: Error writing the POWER ENABLE I/O expander, timeout
ALERT: Error writing the XB CONTROL I/O expander, timeout
ALERT: Error writing the DISPLAY CONTROL I/O expander, timeout
ALERT: NODE EEPROM read error, timeout
ALERT: MAC EEPROM read error, timeout
ALERT: Error initializing the NODE 0 DS1780, timeout
ALERT: Error initializing the NODE 1 DS1780, timeout
ALERT: Error initializing the NODE 2 DS1780, timeout
ALERT: Error initializing LM75 0, timeout
ALERT: MAC EEPROM read error, timeout
ALERT: MAC EEPROM read error, timeout
ALERT: Error reading PSC status: timeout
ALERT: Unknown PSC: 15

I would like to know if this is the typical behavior for bad PSUs (I don’t think so). Maybe there is a problem on a diagnostic bus or whatever is used for checking all the equipment.

Have you ever experienced this? What would you recommend as next steps?

Hi fueler,

You are seeing fuel l1 output I believe.

My first thought is that your Dallas DS1780 chip as lost power and hence lost memory.

There is l1 command to reset eeprom, try Cntrl T to get to l1 prompt.

Just guessing, trying to find starting point.

Cheers,

I finally tried Ctrl+T (and many other key combinations) but it didn't do anything. L1 only repeatedly outputs the timeout messages.

Is this a typical behavior when the Dallas chip's battery is drained?

What are the voltage levels being provided by your PSU out of interest?
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen: R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22
:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30

Voltage levels looked ok when I forced the PSU to start, but it was just a quick measurement and not everything was measured.
