Octane 1.5 + Irix 6.5.26 + Wacom (sharing a great feed back)

Unread postby def13 » Tue Dec 26, 2017 7:04 am

Hi every body !
I hope you share good times during your Christmas period :-)

Santa Claus have been really cool with me this year because he brought me a brand new Wacom Intuos A5 for my Octane ... In fact the first owner never used it and it never quit the packing !

At first, I was a little frightened to try to install it, because I have read lots of posts about the difficulties to install it and to make it work well ... But in fact, it was one of the easiest experience I have had with my SGI !

1- Open System Manager > Hardware and Devices > Serial Device Manager
2- Add a serial device > Input Device
3- Plug the tablette on the port that you have declared a new serial device
4- Install Wacom's drivers (version 4.8.0-2)
5- Restart the computer
6- Play with your graphics tablet

I never have to install eoe.sw.optinput (purhaps it was already install) ...

Awesome! Nice and new.

Also like your keyboard, would love one of those for my Octane.

Ooooh, that's some cool stuff. I should try and find a tablet for the Indy (prices probably won't let me, but anyway, I'll try)
:Indy: R5000@180MHz, 256MB, XL-24, IndyCam
:Indigo2: R10K@195MHz in broken teal case with broken purple bottom, XZ Graphics, missing: RAM, drives/sleds, case bits, PSU; awaiting completion [ATX PSU CONVERSION IN THE WORKS!]
misc: Some Sun stuff, lots of x86 crap, one MSX and a MSX2+, a ZX Spectrum clone, slotloader 400MHz overclocked to 500MHz! iMac G3

@ JacquesT :
Thanks :-)
You can find brand new dark grey SGI keyboard here : http://ordi-spare.com/fr/claviers-souris-occasion/1693-clavier-qwerty-sgi-black-ps2-pn-062-0046-001-2001693000009.html

@ GRudolf94 :
Thanks :-)
The hardest thing is to find an Intuos 1 or 2 with a serial port at correct price. I looked for it during about 6 months and I found it on "Le Bon Coin" (the most famous used objects selling website). Generaly you have to ask the vendor what kind of port is on his tablet ... I found this one : https://www.leboncoin.fr/informatique/1340484424.htm?ca=12_s (there is not the "USB sticker" on the box, perhaps it's a serial port version)

On ebay (with the mouse !!!) : https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Complete-Wacom-Intuos-GD-0912-9x12-Large-Tablet-Pen-4D-Mouse-Uses-Serial-Port/222739435586?hash=item33dc4e1042:g:TxEAAOSwpONZTgf3

@ mia :
It's Shake 3.5, I love this software. It's kind of a soft Discreet Flame, but it's not a "little boy". Originaly I would like to use The Flame but it's impossible to find and looks hard to install and configure (perhaps one day ...).
Shake is ligh and really performant, especially when we use the proxy fonctionnalities (and it is well thought).

---

NOTE : Does someone know if Intuos2 mouse works on a Intuos1 tablet ?

From a random website on the history of Wacom tablets:

"Intuos1 stylus are not compatible with the Intuos2 stylus, this includes all the accessories like the airbrush pen."

So I think an Intuos2 mouse won't work on an Intuos1 :/

No idea, the tablet light shows activity from the pen. A discreet tablet reset key stroke does no good, so I reboot everything.

I wonder whether the tablet uses the handshake lines of the serial port, or just TX and RX

intuos mice (pucks) are some of the most useless things ever, no loss there. they only work on the tablet surface itself, the ergonomics are shocking and the feel of pushing them around is not exactly like a mouse. they have a sort of carpet stuck to their underside, not very smooth.
i have intuos mice for generations 1, 2 and 3, all still in shrinkwrap. shame they are too light to be used as doorstops really. :) thankfully for the current tablet generations these are no longer part of the package although i think wacom might still be selling them separately.

as for the tablet disconnecting itself - never happened here on any generation. perhaps the cable is damaged - or if it's a serial one - the power supply on the way out? also in irix i've always used the wacom-provided driver, never the one that ships with discreet gear (wacom one works for that as well).

I don't want to steal this thread and it's not on my immediate todo list since it happens randomly, but just a note that it never stops working or disconnects, it just doesn't work on occasions on boot up.

That's why they are useless, they aren't pucks but weird type of mice.
A proper digitizer puck has a crosshair that exactly registers a point of the underlying drawing. Wacom supplied them for all their tablets up until the Intuos, when they started shipping the useless "4D mouse" instead. It has no crosshair but does have 4 axes (x, y, rotation, and the side wheel). Turns out those controls were equally useless in 3D programs (where you need Z control and should buy a Spaceball) and 2D programs.
