SGI Origin 2400 Rack cabling help

Unread postby docz » Wed Nov 22, 2017 3:48 pm

Hi guys, I have now put together the rack and the cpu modules. Now I need to figure out where the cables go, and I am hoping you guys can help me out.

These are mighty strange cables for a PC man like myself :)

So I have these fat cables:

They fit in the connectors of the routers on the front of the cpu modules:

But which cable goes to which port? And how many? All 6? I only have 4 cables.

Next on back there are some more stuff. Power cables were easy to no help needed there.
But there is this long cable labled "A B" on one end, then it forks to "A" and "B" looks like SCSI of some sort on the forked ends:

Then there is this terminal module:

I am guessing these are serial ports that go to the DB9 serial ports on the modules.

But there is one RJ style port and a DB25 port on the side, what are those? The DB25 says display, but what kind? Certainly not VGA.

I hope you guys may shed some light on this.

Hi docz,

just in case you were not aware...

The sgi techpubs materials are archived at: http://www.irix7.com and the SGI materials are essential reading for getting any of more complicated rack systems up and running.

see here for example (Origin2000 Rackmount Owner’s Guide): http://www.irix7.com/techpubs/007-3456-003.pdf

Never had a 2000 or 3000 series so this is only tip I can provide ;-)

Cheers,

jwhat.

Ok I read through the documents I got from the irix7 website. I managed to figure out how to connect the two cpu modules, and the serial cables for the terminal module. But I couldn't find anything about that "A / B" cable. Anyone know what that is? And where it is supposed to go?

That's a breakout cable for the quad channel SCSI XIO board. One A/B cable is for two channels.

A cool, I see, I seem to have one of those in each module. So I gather these are to connect to external SCSI devices such as disk arrays?

I also have some other cards, they seem to be different variations of Fibre Channel boards. Guessing they are for the same purpose as the SCSI controllers.

I also have one board with a row of RJ45 plugs and a row of PS/2 styled ports labeled 0 - 5, are these networking ports or a network hub pluss serial interface for some kind of terminal or uplink?

Correct, but beware they are high voltage differential SCSI. I think it's possible to configure channel A in SE mode.

Those are PCI cards in shoehorn XIO adapters. You could replace one with gigabit ethernet.

That's a MENET board: 6x serial ports and 4x 100Mbit ethernet.

The list of available Techpubs archives is at:
http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/TechPubs

I have added irix7 to the list, thanks.
