Indy badges?

Unread postby jan-jaap » Fri Sep 15, 2017 1:46 am

Here's a question about the badges on the case of the Indy.

First, here's what the original Indy (R4x00) looked like:

Indy R4x00

The R5000 Indy looks a little different. The cube logo badge has been moved down, the "Indy" text has been moved to the left to make space for an R5000 badge:

Indy R5000, #1

My own Indy R5000 looks a little different. Like this one which is on eBay right now:

Indy R5000, #2

What's going on here, is this a system that was upgraded with an R5000 CPU at some point?

To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. (IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report)

If I can offer a guess, they used the initial cover until supplies last ( thus gluing the extra badge on the improved units ), then moved to the new design

I think the original R5000 Indy's came with the badge up top. You can see there was room to the right of the "Indy" logo as it was slightly shifted to the left.

I was under the impression that the later image is an R4K with an upgraded CPU ... I vaguely recall reading somewhere that an R5000 upgrade CPU may have come with an R5000 badge to place onto the cover (someone else may be able to confirm if that was correct?).

Perhaps SGI also factory shipped these with the R5000 logo on the lower position..?

As mazzinia says, I think they probably used the custom R5k cover (#2) if they had it, and if not then they just worked with whatever parts they had in stock. During the summer I bought a spares/repair Indy. The model number is CMN B006T180, so a factory shipped 180MHz R5000 config, yet it has the R4x00 style case in photo #1.

The R5000 badge has a distinct curve, which in my opinion was meant to match it left of the "bug" logo. Very similar to the "Power" badge for the R8K Indigo2 paired with the elan/xz/ultra badges

I think so: I have 2 Indys, one is a R5k box and one initially had the R4500 CPU. Both cases are identical. The only difference is that the R4k box has no R5k badge. So machines produced in the same time probably have identical location of logos, I think.
