My shiny new null modem cable came in, which is male-female... and that's where my fun stopped for the day. I'll have to wait for the other new female-female cable to come in, hopefully on Monday.
Edit: Drives don't seem to be spinning up. I should probably just disassemble the whole thing and clean it.
I'd suggest resolving either the null modem/ graphics display adapter/communication with the PROM issue first, otherwise you're literally troubleshooting in the dark.
If asked to pick between the two methods I'd go with the null modem /serial terminal.
While it's fairly easy to resolve once you're up and running, if the system has been run past the power-on-diagnostics without a keyboard/mouse/monitor attached, there's a fair chance your PROM is set to power up in console mode (no graphics, keyboard, or mouse until the PROM setting is changed back).
