Ah thanks Jan - that's a handy tip. I'll give that a go when I get home.

I'm sorry that I cant be of more help!

These machines are rather difficult to troubleshoot, as you don't usually have a whole bunch of spare modules for one of these machines just lying around to swap out!

In my machines case there is also no physical evidence of damage to the pins on the mid-plane, but there is evidence of damage to the connectors of the display generator.

I what to upgrade to the DG5-8 anyway, so if buying one doesn't solve the problem at least the machine has been upgraded a bit.

There is very little literature as to how these graphics pipelines actually work (in terms of what controls what), the problem with my system is therefore either with the Geometry Engine or the Display Generator, as I have tested both raster managers in the machine and they do both work.
(The system works perfectly with one raster manager in place)

It is a rather painful situation, as I would like to see both graphics pipelines in action, as soon as the DG5-8 arrives, we will see.

So a quick update - I can't run irsaudit with any other options, it will always test XG RAM first it seems no matter what options I try (-rm -dg etc). With only the GE installed, I still get the 'WARNING: IR: Bad XG MAPRAM entry found during kona_mapram_init!' on IRIX boot, and when I run irsaudit - so I am pretty sure it is the GE card that is throwing up this error.

I'll post more as I find it.

I am also pretty sure that the MAP RAM refers to the IO4 component of the GE board - which is probably why it can't communicate much more with the board set with this error in place. The reason I say this is cross referencing it with the CHALLENGE™/Onyx™ Diagnostic Road Map where Map Ram is referred too in Figures 1.2, 2.6 and 2.7 with respect to the IO4 boards.

This is also backed up by this paragraph from the Onyx2™ Deskside Workstation Owner’s Guide:

GE Board
The GE board comes equipped with geometry engine ASICs in either a basic
(Onyx2Reality) or more powerful (InfiniteReality or InfiniteReality2) version. The GE
board’s host interface processor (HIP) ASIC communicates with the host system through
an XIO-to-graphics interface (XG ASIC).

So that is where the XG in XG MAP RAM comes from.

Indeed there is a group of chips around the main IC next to the XIO compression connector labelled Motorola MCM69P536ATQ5 which are 32K x 36bit SRAM chips which tallies with this section of my irsaudit:

Code: Select all

INFO                MAP RAM Config = 128Kx32 bits, SSRAM type used = 32K*36
IFO                  bits
RSLT xgid           PASS
TEST xgregs         Test the XG registers
RSLT xgregs         PASS
TEST xgram          Test the XG MAP RAM
INFO                Found XG MAP RAM to have 128K entries
TRCE                Doing XG MAP RAM data path test
TRCE                Doing XG MAP RAM address path test

I am feeling a crazy hardware fix coming on ;o)

Gah....if I could find anyone who sells these chips. I don't suppose anyone has a broken GE board of any flavour they would be willing to donate in the quest for knowledge and a crazy hardware fix experiment? I'll pay postage and packaging of course!

FWIW, you can upgrade the GE with a GE16-4 without replacing the RM board(s). GE16 boards are easier to find. The other way around (GE14 w./ RM9) works as well.

Yeah, I have an upgrade in the works - so that side is taken care of, hopefully getting a IR3 set. Which means my broken board is free to experiment on ;o)

I am going to try and reflow the solder on it tonight see if that is enough to bring it back to life. Fire cures all!

I have a GE-16 I could sell you but I think Ian would be a closer bet. PM when you get a chance.
If the thing isn't on fire it's a software problem.

Thanks for the offer mopar - I have a GE-16 coming my way already, so no need. What I am after now is a donor GE board to see if a repair is possible. This would have to be broken as I don't want to destroy a working board and as near as free as I am really only doing it for a laugh ;o).

I have several GEs and I know that one has issues., I will send it to you for the cost of shipping. Ian may have a dead one as well.

Excellent, thank you very much for the offer. I'll see what Ian has got before I go for the international shipping option! Keep you posted.

A quick update - my replacement GE16 has arrived and did resolve the issue as expected. I will post more about my experiences in this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16732156

as I think I can help Irinikus with his problems. I am still after a broken GE for my experiments on the old board - mopar5150 I will PM you about yours as Ian didn't have any.
