Onyx2 Reality Graphics problems

Unread postby jebmayers » Sun Jul 23, 2017 1:38 am

Hi all,

I recently acquired an Onyx2 with Reality graphics and it seems to have developed a fault. When booting IRIX I get the following error:

Code: Select all

I have tried resetting the GE eeprom using ireeprom, but this either kills itself or fails with 'cannot communicate with graphics board'

Any ideas what might be wrong? I have tried searching for the MAPRAM error but have had limited success - from what I have found I am leaning towards a GE problem?

Any insight would be much appreciated ;o)

Some more info - I get a graphics display on boot and in the PROM, and booting IRIX until it tries to initialise the GFX. I also get the display back when I shut it down IRIX.

I booted the system without graphics and managed to run irsaudit - here are the results:

Just so that I fully understand, confirm that you get a display as the system boots, and only loose the display once IRIX starts it's booting process?

Is the IRIX install on the system a fresh install?

Yes, that is correct, I get a display up until the GFX initiliases and it would display the login screen. I get the graphics console displaying the boot progress.

I have tried it with both the system disk that came with the system and with a fresh 6.5.30 install. It had been working with the original system disk, when it stopped I tried a fresh install of 6.5.30 on a new HDD with no luck.

I take it that you have removed all of the graphics modules and cleaned them.

How many raster managers does the system have? and does it show you the number of raster managers present in the system as the system boots? (on the infinite reality screen)

Did you carry out the fresh IRIX install on the Onyx 2 machine with the CD-ROM fitted in the machine?

It has one RM8-16, and it does show the info on the PROM screen (Reality, 2GE, 1RM or something similar).

Yes, everything has been cleaned - a visual inspection reveals no bent pins. I am going to try and replace the compression connector on the GE as, well why not, it is worth a go. I am not holding out much hope though.

How did you install IRIX on the new system disk?

The graphics system seems to be working properly if it shows the correct info on startup.

I'm just thinking that your install of IRIX might not have the relevant Graphics libraries for the graphics setup that you have installed in your machine.

Yes it was installed on the Onyx2 with the internal CD-ROM. Regardless, the problem developed with the old system disk where things had been working fine.

Does anyone happen to know which subsystem it is testing when irsaudit doing TEST xgram? GE, RM or DG? Or even worse Midplane? That is my real fear - GE, RM I will happily replace as I was considering an upgrade anyway - DG5 would be annoying but again is replaceable, but I am not sure I want to replace the midplane.

MY Onyx 2 currently has a problem in that it simply wont display a picture with both raster managers installed (even during the initial boot sequence), but it works fine with one raster manager and both raster managers do work.

I have a DG5-8 coming in from the US, which should hopefully solve my problem as there seems to be some damage on the connector of my DG5-2.

I pray that this fixes the problem, or I may also be in for a mid-plane replacement, and that would be a real mission!

I hope you can sort your machine out, I do think that it's strange that you get picture on initial boot, but not as IRIX boots!

It may not be a hardware problem.

I have had a problem similar to this before on other SGI machines, when IRIX didn't have the required library's to support the graphics hardware installed in the machine.

If you stop for maintenance, before IRIX boots and do an hinv, what does it show?

a PROM hinv is showing the graphics option. Just to illustrate that this was a sudden thing, here is the SYSLOG from the session before the error first appeared and the one where it appeared. Please excuse the time and date being wrong ;o)
