Indigo 2 panic with ethernet

Unread postby Toxiccameron » Fri May 05, 2017 6:59 pm

So I'm trying to use the Ethernet port on my indigo 2 for network installation but whenever it tries to use Ethernet with a cable plugged in, the system crashes with the bad address 0x8. Removing the hard drive and CD Rom didn't change anything but when I unplug the Ethernet, it only complains about there not being Ethernet plugged in with no crash. Do i have to use a special kind of Ethernet? Right now I'm using a laptop to share Ethernet to the computer with a standard cat5e cable.

You need a crossover cable to 'share' Ethernet. But as for the routing you'll need to ask someone else here.

I have an old post that runs through setting up an O2 to connect through a Windows 7 PC. Perhaps that will help.

The problem there though is that I can't even install irix. I've had no luck burning cds and the Ethernet crashes the computer when I try to use it for network installation. I'm not sure if I would be able to connect it to my modem as the room it's in doesn't have any ethernet.

Sorry about that! I read a little too quickly!

Have you reset the PROM environment on the Indigo 2 as described in http://shiftleft.com/mirrors/dina.harrydebug.com/ ?

Yep. Double checked. I have attached the error it puts out when it gets Ethernet info.

Hey Cameron if you have a Best Buy or Microcenter or can order off Amazon get a set of powerline adapters, that way you can tunnel Ethernet over your homes mains wiring and avoid the issue of the Indigo panicking.

I tried that too and had the same issue. I think my motherboard might be bad..

Don't despair you can always pick up an aui transceiver and try that. Failing that, check with Krokodil as he was selling a motherboard

Have you tried a different cable, especially a crossover cable?

Yup. $50.00 USD for an Indigo2 IMPACT mainboard with R4400 250MHZ processor! It will be going on Ebay soon otherwise, because it's sitting around taking up space and I would like to move it on.

Disclaimer: Before anyone decides to send me a PM about how that's not an R4400... I am well aware of that. Couldn't find a suitable picture of an R4400 and board in a pinch. Thanks for your understanding.

Hmm. I have a r10000 on the motherboard I have. Can I move it to the other one?

Ah. No. You have to upgrade the board to upgrade the CPU. :x

Damn. I saw an r10000 board on eBay that is identical to the one I have but I'll wait for the transceiver before I go spend more money on this computer.

I upgraded my R4400 Impact (Ready) to R10000 with an ebay motherboard several months ago. Added a Solid Impact board from ebay too so it's actually Impact - kind of wish I had a 10000 badge but oh well...

Your problem sounds like a bad network interface sadly and probably won't change much with an AUI transceiver. Hope I'm wrong, but it should have worked - 1gig port on your laptop would be auto mdi-x so no crossover cable should be required. You could try changing your ram around and reseating the CPU just to be sure it wasn't a hardware problem in those areas. Or maybe you do have a cable problem and the PROM code is bad at handling it, for that I would try some simple switch and a known good cable - though it sounds like you've probably been down that road already.
