3D Print Octane front door?

Unread postby Raion-Fox » Thu May 04, 2017 9:04 pm

So I'm bidding on an Octane2 without a front door. I thought about how the doors/hinge are pretty fragile and wanted to see if anyone is willing try 3d printing the door. I asked my machine shop about CNC but because of its shape it would cost a fortune to CNC mill even a small run. As I'm not versed in 3D printing, I don't know if the plastics produced will be too brittle. I'd probably end up sanding and painting it, tbh.

PLA is brittle, but it's strong enough that that shouldn't matter. You need a 3D model of the door obviously.

PLA-door sounds ok for me.

Might be much stronger than most SGI plastics these days...

Quite possibly stronger, you're right. I don't know how well I would be able to replicate something like the Octane door, I have essentially no experience with organic shapes (as opposed to say, a more geometric but still complicated Indigo door). I could look to see if I could find an Octane model elsewhere and then essentially cut out the door. Will have to see.

Says the shuttle demo includes a model of the Octane.

Actually, that's video of an Inventor demo that was created from Pro/E models of the individual parts, no way to extract the models from that. Interesting that they actually modeled the chips on the mainboard.

Whoever has 3D scanner - please step forward.

The door wouldn't be that hard to model; with a caliper and Pro/E I think you could get pretty dang close in about an hour. Of course, you'd actually have to have a door in order to do that. And Pro/E. Wait a minute, I've got both! Hmmmm.... 8-)

Yeah, I have a door and caliper, and could provably find Pro/E, but I'm just not really experienced enough (especially not in Pro/E, which I've never used). I mainly use SketchUp, which is great for some jobs and horrible for others.

Can't do anything with an Open Inventor 2.0 file then?

Does seem to be one piece, but maybe if it can be imported into something it can be sliced up?

Managed to get this converted to an .stl a bit more useful for 3D printing. Managed to do this with someone's old c++ code here: http://people.sc.fsu.edu/~jburkardt/cpp ... ivcon.html

However, this appears to just be the SGI logo =/ Maybe japes can clarify on that.

This is what I got when importing the converted .stl into TinkerCAD
Image

Still, could be fun to 3D print, and we have a MakerBot at work, so I'm going to print this for the heck of it. Here's the STL file if anyone else is interested.

I printed the Logo and use it in my videos. This model is also available on Thingiverse, probably converted from the same place.

True, but I haven't seen any with the actual lettering up on Thingiverse. Not that it really matters.

I tried printing this, but I'm not sure makerware could make sense of the SGI cube. I got a few cylinder posts sticking up on the build platform. The lettering came out nice, but that's not much to write home about.
