Indy memory problem - runs with 4x32, but not with 8x32

Unread postby halfmanhalftaco » Fri Apr 28, 2017 8:38 am

I have an Indy with an R4600SC cpu and the XL24 graphics board that I'm trying to max out the RAM on. It came to me with 8x 8MB SIMMS, so I went out and picked up a set of 8 32MB 60ns FPM/parity SIMMs.

When all 8 32MB SIMMs are installed, it chimes like normal, I can get into the PROM monitor, etc, but it never gets past the "The system is coming up" screen. Since my understanding is that RAM has to be installed in banks of 4, I pulled the top bank of 4 out and it boots without a hitch. Swapping in SIMMs from the set I removed into the lower bank also boots successfully every time.

Anyone know what's going on? It doesn't seem to be bad RAM because any of them work fine when in the lower bank. And I know all the SIMM slots do work because it originally had 8x8MB in it.

My suspicion is that you do not have a large enough swap partition if your kernel is configured to use hard swap space.

I have a 512MB swap partition.

Another data point, it also fails to boot with 4x32MB in the lower bank (the bank closest to the power supply), and 4x8MB in the upper bank.

One or more of the ram chips could be faulty, you may have to mix and match (also with the 8Mb Chips)...

That's a good point. You can run the hardware confidence test by typing "boot stand/ide" at the PROM console prompt.

I'm running the 'memtest' command in ide as we speak. Should I also run the 'dram'/'ldram' or any other tests?

Ran memtest, dram and ldram and they all passed. I let it run the normal bank of tests including the graphics tests and those all passed as well.

I can also boot into fx just fine, but booting into IRIX installers fails - kernel panics each time. I tried IRIX 5.3, 6.2 and 6.5.22. The miniroot copies then it either kernel panics when it boots the install before getting to the Inst> prompt (6.2 and 6.5.22), or panics when turning the network on when selecting a software source with 'from' (5.3).

I'll have to see if they throw the same panic each time, but the 6.5.22 installer gave a PANIC: VEC_syscall, 6.2 did PANIC: kernel used coprocessor, and 5.3 did PANIC: kernel fault.

Starting to think I'm stuck with 128MB on this thing.
