No graphics out from Indigo2

Unread postby itsvince725 » Tue Mar 14, 2017 12:19 pm

I got my 13W3 to VGA adapter from Acronym1 on eBay yesterday and I was eager to fire up the Indigo2 for the first time and see what's on the original system disk. Unfortunately, I can't seem to actually get video out. :(

Monitors used whIle testing:

Samsung SyncMaster 793DPF
Dell UltraSharp 1707FPc

I used a PC PS2 keyboard and mouse as I haven't gotten SGI ones yet, I don't know if that is a problem.

I noticed the system disk makes no real noise to speak of and the drive light only lights up occasionally and that the light for the machine itself is yellow, I don't know if that means anything.

The light turns yellow during self-test. When the test passes, it turns to green.

It never turned green though, even after about two minutes or so...so does that mean it's failing its POST?

The seller did say it doesn't boot properly and failing POST definitely isn't booting properly.

Get a DIN8 to serial null-modem cable. You will need to serial in and see if there's console output.

Reseat all of the memory, the CPU board, check for capacitor leakage and reseat the video board as well.

Serial in with what?

Reseating everything is certainly something I can do, though.

Pop the drive out as well. It should reach the PROM screen fine with no hard drive attached. Unlikely to be the cause of the issue, but every little helps!

For the serial cable, you'll need another machine with a serial port (or a serial to USB adapter). You can then see what messages are being generated using something like PuTTY and this should help to see why it's failing to POST. At least, this works with later SGIs. Must admit I've not tried it with an Indigo2...

Update!

All the RAM, the video card, and the CPU board are seated firmly. A ribbon cable that plugs in next to the CPU board had come loose so I reconnected it. The hard drive is definitely dead, I can't even feel it spinning when the machine is running. Tried booting with and without the hard drive and it still never made it past POST.

I'm going to try taking the RAM out and blowing out the SIMM slots but I'm not hopeful.

Okay, removing the RAM and CPU board and repeating them didn't improve anything. What would I even use as a console? I haven't found USB to Mini DIN 8 cables...

SCSI drives do not necessarily spin up until they receive a START UNIT command from the host. It was commonly a jumpered option in case autostart was desired.
The "ribbon cable next to the CPU board" is the internal SCSI connection.

The memory will only be recognized if it is in the correct position. It must be filled in sets of 4 identical SIMMs, beginning nearest the machine's front (adjacent to the CPU). If the memory is populated in the wrong order or the sets do not match, it cannot boot.

You use a serial terminal with a null-modem cable, the same as with any computer with a serial console.

All the RAM is matching, I made sure of that (it's true in many old Macs too and I come from a 68k/PPC Mac background).

I know I need a null-modem cable, but the serial ports on the Indigo2 are RS422 Mini-DIN 8 ports and all I have that can connect to those ports is old Macs. I've found non-Apple Mini-DIN 8 cables but they're advertised as RS232, not RS422.

The serial ports are compatible with RS232 and use it by default. RS422 is an option, but it needs to be specially enabled by software. A mac serial printer cable will work as a null-modem, and you can then plug it into a USB serial adapter like a Keyspan 28X. That's what I use.

Alright, I'll have to try and find that adapter. I didn't know the ports were RS232 capable.

Update!

My PowerBook 180 has ClarisWorks 2.0, which includes a console emulator. I managed to get it to connect to the Indigo2 via serial cable but I can't get any output from the Indigo2 itself. I know there's something about running the Indigo2 headless but I don't see how I'd do that when I can't successfully boot the machine.

What settings are you using for the serial connection? There is some information here about cables and settings: http://oss.sgi.com/mips/i2-howto.html In short, 9600 baud, 8 bits and one stop bit.

According to my Indigo2 manual, a solid amber LED means either failed graphics, or failed CPU board. You could try to run it without the graphics card to test, as Indigo2s can be run in headless mode. In other words, if the LED then goes green, the CPU board is fine and it sounds like a dead graphics board.

I actually tried without the graphics board and it still stayed yellow. I guess my CPU must be bad. :(

I used those settings for the connection thanks to the Wiki.
