FUEL Psu Fixed...

Unread postby jammaster » Wed Mar 01, 2017 11:52 am

I have fixed a Fuel PSU today if it can help someone.

The culprits were 3 Capacitors on the pusle daughter board.
This little daughter board is mounted on the main power PCB (At the bottom of the PSU connected to the powerline).

All the capas of power board:
4C4 33uf 35V
4C3 10uf 50V
4C5 1000uf 10V

1C19 680uf 10V
1C21 2.2uf 50V
1C20 10uf 50V
2C1 47uf 25V
2C2 4.7uf 25V
1C17 22uf 50V
5C1 47uf 25V

Dead ones were 4C3 4C4 4C5 and 1C19 was not healthy !
You need to desolder this daughter board before doing anything...

You can test your PSU whitout a Load/Workstation by grounding green wire/pin of the WTX connector.

Good job! :) Nice to see people fixing these.
Electrolytic capacitors do seem to be the culprit for most age related electronics failures.

For trying to lower the risk of fixing PSUs and testing them afterwards, "electronic loads" are a good tool, although somewhat expensive. See: http://www.tequipment.net/power-supplie ... nic-loads/

They can be programmed for constant current, constant power, and the more advanced ones can follow load patterns that you can program for duty cycle testing. Most of them will have various protections built in to make them harder to zap, for example if one of the switching MOSFETs fails and starts conducting through some hundreds of volts (in some designs).

Well done!

Was that the NMB or the HiPro power supply?

When it's a more rare PSU, I use and alternostat/variable PSU for pushing up gently the primary voltage.
I was talking about green wire just for starting up the PSU. This one doesn't need a load (HD/mobo) for powering up.
In add, i use my tiny tektronix scope just to see the ripple/noise of the main output rails (5V 12V 3.3V)
