Can you boot an O350 over NFS?

Unread postby Raion-Fox » Sat Feb 18, 2017 4:05 pm

Wondering because I've gotten myself a mystery O350 on the way without an IO9 kit. I do have an O300 here though and I wanted to know if I can make the O350 boot with an NFS root on the O300 or not.

If not I can cannibalize the A350 with an IO9 kit in it for the necessary parts but I wanted to know.

Booting an O350 over NFS should be doable, IIRC... But isn't the ethernet port part of the IO9 kit?

An O350 w/o an IO9 is an expansion unit and if you try to boot it without connecting to a system I'm pretty sure it won't. It will say it's missing the IO board or IO subsystem.

I'll cannibalize my A350 then :/

If you haven't already made other arrangements, you could link NUMAlink the O300 and O350 and let the O300 directly provide boot functions/disk i/o.

Here's an hinv for a NUMAlink'd O300/O350 combo: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16722158

Both units in that pairing had the same processor speed, but it will still work even if your processor speeds are mismatched.

That O350 had an IO9, so I set it as the master. In your case you'll likely want to set the O300 as master, so if you decide to try it you'll need to tweak the linking procedure accordingly.

Please note that you'll need an L2 (or a linux box set up as an L2 emulator) to restore the slave unit's original serial number (or as a resuscitation device on the unlikely chance you fubar the pairing process).

I didn't know they could be mixed haha. I was under the impression that mixing wasn't possible. Thanks Recondas.
