Can't get SCSI2SD working on Challenge S

Unread postby Fleeno » Wed Nov 30, 2016 8:03 pm

I have a Challenge S (Indy) that I'm trying to setup with a SCSI2SD. I'm actually trying to install OpenBSD from an external CDROM, and when I attempt to boot I get this:

>> scsi(0)cdrom(6)partition(8)bootecoff scsi(0)cdrom(6)partition(0)/bsd.rd.IP22

Cannot load scsi(0)cdrom(6)partition(8)bootecoff.

I have the SCSI2SD setup with a 4GB card, and I've followed the directions in the wiki entry and believe I have it setup about the same, other than my card is smaller.

If I use a real HDD instead, I can boot the OpenBSD installer just fine.

I feel like it's some sort of SCSI issue, as I also get this on boot:

dks0d1s0: volume header not valid
sc0,1,0: SYNC negotiation error, resetting SCSI bus
Warning: unrecognized volume header type.

I've tried it with and without the terminator resistors installed, though I don't think I need them since I have a terminator on there, which works with the real drives.

Here's a quick hinv just for some info:

Primary D-cache size: 16 Kbytes

Thanks!

Is the SCSI connector keyed for polarity? What you said is that the CDROM drive works when a "real HDD" is used, but not when the SCSI2SD is plugged in. What about when nothing is plugged in?
Does your SCSI HDD supply termination power to the bus?

The SCSI connector does have a notch/key, so they should be connected properly.

I did just try it with no HDD or SCSI2SD connected, and it does work just fine that way!

As for the HDD supplying termination power, I'm not sure. I'll have to find the manual for it and see if it does or not.

Thanks!

About the SYNC error, see the http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/SCSI2SD entry:

I've installed IRIX 6.5.22m on the SCSI2SD device for my 180MHz R5000 Indy with 192MB ram and a XL24 graphics board. The installation is the same as installing on a regular disk, but because the SCSI2SD board does not support sync negotiation, you will receive the following warnings:

- sc0,1,0: SYNC negotiation error, resetting SCSI bus.
- NOTICE: wd93 SCSI Bus=0 ID=1: SYNC negotiation error, resetting bus.

Just a guess, did you update to the latest SCSI2SD firmware? Initially I had quite some problems with the adapter, but after a certain firmware release the behaviour of the SCSI2SD adapter got much more predictable. It might be worth a try.

Hi Tom, I did update to the latest firmware. I haven't tinkered with it much in the last few days, but I'm getting back to it now. Hopefully I can get it working!

What hardware version is your SCSI2SD card? It sounds as if you have the latest v6 version of the card.

The hardware version is V5.0a, and I'm on firmware 4.6.

Thinking it was a SCSI issue, I've since added a different terminator onto the back of my external CD-ROM drive. That hasn't made a difference.

But, I've instead decided to try installing IRIX instead. I can boot into fx and (apparently) partition the SD drive, but after that I try to boot into the installer and get a similar message:

Insert the installation CD-ROM, then press <enter>:

Cannot load scsi(0)cdrom(6)partition(8)sashARCS.
Illegal f_magic number 0x0, expected MIPSELMAGIC or MIPSEBMAGIC.
Cannot load scsi(0)cdrom(6)partition(8)sashARCS -- execute format error.

Unable to continue; press <enter> to return to the menu:

I did swap back in my real HDD, and it does work there. I've tried several SD cards as well. Maybe I just have a bad adapter?

Well, I got it working in a round-about way...

I installed IRIX on a real HDD in this system, then added the SCSI2SD as a second drive. I cloned the root HDD to the SD, removed the HDD, and it boots fine from the SCSI2SD!

So now I have a working Challenge S with a 4GB SD drive.

This indeed sounds like the adapter causing problems on the SCSI bus. It does look easily testable because the system can't boot from the CDROM when the SCSI2SD is attached.

I never used the SCSI2SD card with additional hardware on the SCSI bus, since i can netboot most of these systems. Good that you have it running, another silent MIPS IRIX/OpenBSD box humming along!

It's just IRIX for now! I decided that since almost anything can run OpenBSD, that this machine should stay pure.

I should really get setup for serving up installs over the network. I'm going to be reinstalling my Octane soon on a SSD, and potentially have a new Indigo2 on the way.
