Indigo 2 GU1-Extreme vs. Solid Impact?

Unread postby climbingcolorado » Thu Sep 22, 2016 9:19 pm

Hello,

I just got my hands on two Indigo 2 computers. One has an R10k@195Mhz w/Solid Impact graphics and the other has an R4400@250Mhz w/GU1-Extreme graphics (both in purple cases). Which graphics card is better? I've found several websites that describe what the two cards are, various graphics options, and their history but no performance comparison data.

Cordially,

Ian Mapleson has compiled some very interesting performance comparisons, like this one:
http://www.futuretech.blinkenlights.nl/ ... lebuf.html

You can see that R10K Solid IMPACT is between 10% to 200% faster than R4400 EXtreme. For some applications the advantage to IMPACT is somewhat greater.

Even though you're already an owner Ian's indigo2 buyer's guide is still a worthwhile read: http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/i2info.html

the impact has more juice but the extreme is more compatible. in fact your r4400/extreme combination is one of the most compatible of all. no program i know of complains about it and you can run everything from irix 4 to 6.5.22

Well, it's more compatible from an OS perspective, but of course the downside is that you can't run MIPS4 stuff such as Nekoware, hence I'd say compatibility varies depending on what you're looking at.

To be honest, I'm not planning on doing much graphically with the systems; maybe play BZFlag or Doom for fun. Does anyone remember the command to bring up the CPU, video, and memory utilization bar chart? It's been forever since I've sat at an SGI.

Thanks!
