Oh kuba, don't worry, they will be used alright. 8) One of the things I'm hoping to do is encourage certain types of industrial company (mainly hospitals) to switch to a standard PSU with your adapter when they need a replacement, because at the moment they get whacked for a hefty bill in order to obtain an original unit, especially the HP model. There are a lot of medical scanners and other systems aroound the world that use Fuels (more use O2s, but nevertheless the numbers are still significant).

One might of course say but surely the cost being high means I can sell them for more money, in theory good from my point of view re paying the bills. Trouble is, that's no use if one can't obtain original units anyway, and it makes it more difficult for smaller businesses to afford; I like to help SMEs when I can.

I've already persuaded numerous companies to move away from old 50pin replacement disks for Indigo/Indy/Indigo2, switching to newer/reliable SCA + adapter; this has made a big difference in reliability, and reduced costs significantly. Last week I repaired an industrial R3K Indigo for a textile company in Minnesota, replaced the old 4GB with 2x 36GB 15K, the 2nd disk as a backup clone. I included cloning script commands, cron setup, and updated the 5.3 OS to include XFS, so now the root mount itself is XFS. Doing this kind of improvement for old SGIs with PSUs and other elements is the next step.

Never ceases to blow my mind how many companies do not have backups.

Ian.

120 connectors later...

Took a tad longer than estimated, I ended up having to return the strong soldering iron and getting another one. Things went smoothly after that.
Current progress - 18 boards are complete and tested, remaining haven't been tested yet.

Almost ready to ship.

To my disgust, I totally missed this thread until now!

Obviously, I got me one of kubatyszko's early prototypes on ebay... that one works perfect!
Are there some spares from the actual batch left eventually, say two or three?
Besides my recently revived Fuel, I hatch four more, one of these already dead.

Btw., has anyone ever tried to revive the original SGI PSU somehow?

If you can find a company with the relevant skilled staff, original PSUs can be repaired. I'll be doing this soon with three units.

I have, and it's not easy, my PSU for example had the builtin microcontroller blown and the repair wasn't possible. I even asked Minebea (manufacturer of the NMB PSU) for schematics but that didn't work out.

Ian.

This is doable given sufficient resources, but out of range for us "casual" users, if Ian is charging $900 for a PSU, then buying a broken one for less than $50 means he can even spend $500 on a repair cost alone.
Definitely not worth paying this much for personal use - hence my affordable adapters ;)

Cheers
