Got myself a IP22 Indigo2

Unread postby Raion-Fox » Mon Jul 14, 2014 11:01 am

So this passed weekend I got a Teal Indigo2 with R4400 @ 200MHz 256MB RAM and Extreme graphics as part of a deal for $250 that included a decent O2 R10k, an Indy with unknown specs, some software which I needed and some graphics cards and miscellaneous parts.

Powered it up, noticed its very quiet, and also not as heavy as my Fuel or Octane. So I've a new machine, which I've named Gaira. Since its rather low spec I'm considering getting more RAM for it and possibly selling off the Extreme graphics card and running it headless as a Challenge M as a software install server, a role Yuyuko, my Fuel, has been doing. Since Yuyuko may be eventually traded off ( I find the Fuels powerful, but cheap feeling ) I'd like to ensure I've assigned her roles to other machines.

A few questions:

If I'm planning to go mostly headless, but still want a video card, should I get an XL/Newport or an XZ? I'm going to leave the graphics work to my Octane and Fuel, so I'm mostly looking for something compact but not that slow for 6.5.22m which is going on it as soon as I dump my disks to the Fuel.

:Octane2: R12000A 400MHz V6 2.5GB RAM
:Indy: (Acclaim) R4600 133MHz XL Graphics 32MB RAM
:Indy: (Challenge S) R4600 133MHz (MIPS III Build Server)

I am probably posting from yangxiaolong, HP Z230 with Xeon E3-1230v3, 16GB RAM, GeForce 750ti, and running NetBSD and Windows 8.1 Embedded.

If you're running it largely headless and won't be doing any sort of 3D stuff, XL is the one to go for. It will also offer better 2D performance than an XZ, and is only a single slot card (so should use a chunk less power as well). Of course, if you're ever intending to bung a monitor onto it occasionally for 3D stuff, XZ will be a better option.

One note about the volume of it, my Indigo2 (admittedly an IMPACT) was quite noisy when I got it - at least on a par with my Fuel, if not a bit louder. Do check that both the PSU and front fans are working properly on it!
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen: R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22
:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30

Got it. I'll look for an XL card then so I can get some more goodies in the freed slots. I'll probably pop a monitor on it, but no, 3D stuff will be reserved for the more capable systems. This will be the install server, BSD-style dev machine and such.

And yes, all fans work fine, I'm just so used to the Fuel being loud, although I gotta check to see if the HDD is spinning up in it or not, that may be the noise I'm not hearing.
