13w3-->VGA -->Dualhead2Go(digital)

Unread postby Vanne » Mon Jul 07, 2014 9:31 pm

hi, anyone know if this setup would work? would the matrox work without sync on green?

that would be a cheap way to span a couple of cheap monitors with my Octane?

cheers

Doesn't look likely. It requires a DisplayPort input, which is Digital. 13W3 and VGA are analogue only.

Even if you could somehow convert the signal to digital, what you'd then need to do is to custom-create a video format file that spits out a double-width resolution. That might be pushing the limits of what your Octane can do and also depends a lot on whether it's a VPro or MardiGras graphics board in it. Given all that, SoG is the least of your troubles :)

What are you talking about ? This is not correct.

A quick Google took me to Matrox's page where it claimed this, although further looking suggests it's the SE device with the DisplayPort input and that the original one does indeed have a VGA input, apologies for that one.

Edit: As you've edited your post, my second snipe is retracted :)

Nonsense. The Matrox page

never claimed anything like what you said. It's irresponsible to make statements based on "a quick Google look " ...

Exactly. You looked at the wrong thing and told him it was impossible. Not cool.

Chances are real good that it would work great.

Interesting concept - this page has a fairly concise rundown on i/o connectivity and resolutions. As far as IRIX goes the catch is likely to be in what resolution it expects to it receive the incoming image (e.g. 3840x1200 or 2x1920x1200), and if it can process that image to span multiple displays without the intervention of a matrox-supplied driver

If the dualhead2go could be made to work it could offer an alternative to the not-easy-to-source DCD. Looks like the dualhead2go would also allow for a 2@1680x1050 desktop, which is something you can't do with the DCD.

Firstly, at no point did I say it was impossible. Learn to read.

Secondly, I accept I made a small mistake, these things happen. What I looked at was a very similar device, but admittedly not the exact one the op meant.

Thirdly, you've still got the issue with creating a double-width custom res and this is hardware dependant, so that point still stands.

Fourth: If you're going to react in such a hostile, belittling and petty manner over three separate posts when someone makes a small mistake whilst trying to help, then seriously - screw you. There's plenty of politer ways of pointing it out. And yes, I did see what you originally put in your first post before you edited it. As it is, I'll be sure to point out what an irresponsible moron you are the next time you make a small mistake or omission somewhere if that's how you want to play it.

Ok guys thanks for the info. No need to get upset, I stuff shit up all the time ;-)

I'll give it a go if I can pick one up for cheap. Should this work out of the box or will I need to write a config file?

Cheers

Chances are real good you'll need to use the video format compiler to create a new graphics format. (Ha ha ! Caught SGI in a boo-boo :P)

First question will be, what graphics do you have ?

Second question will be, what resolution and refresh do you need ?

Third will be, when recondas comes over to make it work, how's about your edid info ? I wonder how that works with the dualhead ? Hmmm. Does the dualhead emit edid info downstream ?

Most likely you are going to want a V12, the lowly V10 barely has enough memory for 1920 x 1200 @ 60 hurts ... With a V12 tho, you can do 3840 x 1200 no problemo.

The O2 might be fun to try as well, it has more memory and should be able to go bigger but there was some glitch in the giddiup about compiling formats larger than 1600 x 1024 on O2 ? It's been discussed here. ( Hint : search button ^ )

V8 should also be suitable as the res is likely to be high enough to get beyond the unusable pixel clock window.

Resurrecting this thread as I recently acquired two of these, one the model the op saw with VGA input and two DVI outputs, another all-analogue with two VGA outputs. The latter seems limited to 2x1280x1024, though later firmware might change that. The two-DVI model does produce 2x1920x1080 at 60Hz using 16bit colour, with a Matrox driver and config utility under WinXP (but the same PC running Win10 seems unable to reach that, I suspect because it insists on 32bit colour ). Win7 on a Thinkpad X1 (Intel HD5000 graphics) reaches 2x1600x900.

[EDIT: dunno if this was responsible but the X1 failed to boot properly next day; turns out the DP-VGA adapter should only do one full HD output]

Monitors are two Acer S241HL.

I have a Fuel with V12, but found output via a DVI to VGA adapter poor at high resolution, so am a little sceptical about DVI to VGA to Dualhead dual DVI. But happy to experiment if anyone can work up a config file - I have parsed the S241HL's EDID for xorg.conf purposes so can relay modeline info as needed.
