Can't type into Indy serial console?

Unread postby mattst88 » Sat Apr 12, 2014 3:53 pm

I'm trying to get serial console to work on a couple of Indys.

I have Indy -> [Mini-DIN8M/DB25M cable] -> [DB25F/DB9M adapter] -> [DB9F/DB9F null modem cable] -> PC

The Indy boots (no keyboard attached), and I get the System Maintenance Menu prompt, but it doesn't accept my input from the PC. I've confirmed this behavior with two Indys, so I doubt they're individually to blame.

I'm using GNU Screen with default settings (9600 8n1). Any idea what's going on?

Thats's a fair amount of serial gender-bending. Have you already compared the pin out from one end to the other? Seem to vaguely recall a few of of the mini-din8 to DB25 cables intended for early macs didn't provide the right connections for reliable terminal access.

I have not. This NetBSD page [1] gave a hint though: "Macintosh serial cables work great for serial-console cables, as long as you are willing to do it without hardware handshaking lines."

Running screen with hardware flow control off lets it work.

Code: Select all

screen /dev/ttyS0 ixon ixoff

I'll probably get a different cable with the appropriate lines [2] though.
