Why bother with the workstation when you could have *four* porn channels

To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. (IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report)

I wish :( But this is ten, twelve year old technology, only good for doddering fuddy-duddies like me. Like, with today's incredible exponential advances in computing travelling forward at Warp Factor Twelve, this is just a bit of flotsam in some third world backwater. Due to the tremendous benefits brought to society by globalization, free trade, and the efficiencies delivered by modern capitalism and innovation, I'm sure that you guys can run over to Walmart and buy better stuff for $29.95.

You could if you had a job, anyway.

While I'm sure the T221 looks great, I was actually giving a nod to the 100 year-old Lawrence-of-Arabia technology shown in your photo - the Brough Superior motorcycle.

Oops. That's an AJS. The Brough was a James A Prestwich v-twin. Although they also built a few h-fours. Now that is some yet-to-be discovered hundred-year-old technology :P

...back off topic, here's the post about configuring synergy: viewtopic.php?p=116656#p116656

Working great so far for connectivity, but I haven't figured out how to change the origin of the second DCD channel to be (0,1200) instead of (1920,0) so that they are vertically instead of horizontally aligned. There is a field in xsetmon that appears to be editable, but the "Set" button does not seem to actually do anything or contribute to the saved settings file for display properties. Any thoughts?

I am not so sure you can, using setmon. All the dcd literature shows the mousey going from left side screen of channel 1 to right side screen of channel 0, even with the monitors vertically placed. (Did that make sense ?) It seems as if their version of 'vertically placed' means "horizontally arranged screens stacked on top of each other."

ircombine for Reality gives you a lot more capability in screen placement; there is something similar for Octane and O3xx. Oldtimer's has removed the name of the app from my brain but someone smarter will remember it here shortly.

I think you'll find that the x and y aspects of the display are hard coded into 2@ vfo microcode. Even if you were to recode the vfo to provide 2@1200x1920, as hamei mentioned, their relative orientation would still be left<>right.

The channel settings panel in xsetmon was intended for use with sgi channel hardware other than the VPro dual channel display option - those that allow the composition of a single display from multiple graphics inputs.

Well, shucks. Maybe they'll add that feature in the next all-platform IRIX release? :)

I do like having more vertical real estate so I think I can live with the slightly discordant experience. Synergy rescales the location the mouse cursor leaves the left screen to the same percentage along the right screen even though the number of pixels is cut in half, so the cursor doesn't get 'stuck' in the bottom right corner. Anything full screen on the irix system looks chopped in half, but that's a small price to pay for making IRIX more accessible for day-to-day stuff on a very pleasant monitor!

For what you are trying to do, I'd offer two simple choices :

Use stripes on the Irix screen rather than tiles OR use a single 1920 x 2400 input to the right hand side of the panel.

If you choose stripes, I believe you have to go all-stripedy. If your Linux half can do that, bob's your uncle. I could be wrong tho. This monitor will do stuff that is not in the manual.

I hadn't thought of that, but it just might work. I'll have to figure out the modelines and the vfo file creation stuff, but I'm sure at least linux can manage that. Thanks!
