Hello,

I've got a strange issue that happens occasionally. When I leave my computer on for a while and the screensaver comes on, the system will log me out when I move the mouse to clear the screensaver and use the computer again. When the system logs me out, the screen goes black and I have to turn off the monitor and turn it back on to see the image on the screen. That's when I see the login screen. I also notice that it has changed resolution back to it's default 2x@1280x1024. This happens maybe once a month or so. I usually leave my computer on 24/7. My setup is a bit unique in the sense that I'm using a 1600SW with multilink and running a custom resolution to support the 1600SW. I'm not sure if anyone else has seen anything similar to this, but any help would be appreciated. It's not such a big deal, but it can be a bit annoying.

Sounds like an X server crash. Check the logs after it happens next time and see if anything shows up.

What screensaver are you using, it may be buggy... try playing with the different options in the screensaver (lower detail/texturing off/etc) or just use a different one. Electropaint is still my favourite, but life is really nice as well.

I can see that there's a graphics error of sorts. Any of you know the cause, or have seen anything like this?

Most likely a buggy screensaver. Which one are you using? Do you experience crashes with a different screensaver enabled?

I was using Helios. I have also had this problem with others screensavers from the same provider/family of screensavers (non SGI bundled). I'll try using one of the ones that is bundled, like ElectroPaint etc...
If I have any more issues, i'll report back.

BTW, some of the screensavers that are loaded in don't work as screensavers, but work if I launch them as separate apps. MatrixView is one of them. Anyone else have this issue? Maybe the cause of this issue is also the reason for the crashing.

I see the same problem with neko_rssglx screen savers on my IP35 systems with V12 graphics.

Now that I'm not using a CRT, I just turn the monitor off.

Is it possible to change the command options that 4dwm uses (i.e. for lattice, set it to always be the donuts) ?

Those RSS savers have a lot of different options but I never found a way to set them within 4dwm, only from command line...

I used to turn the monitor off when I had a CRT, LCDs don't use a lot of energy so a screensaver becomes more practical...

Mine uses 135 watts

The cathode itself wears out whenever the HV is on. When new, electrons escape from a sharp point at the end. As the cathode material wears, the electrons escape from the sides (further and further from the tip) and the monitor becomes fuzzy, dull, and out-of-focus. The phenomenon is similar to a pencil wearing down. The phosphors wear out too, this effect is most pronounced on projection tubes with burned-in images, unless the image is completely black.

The heater filaments also wear when on. You are correct that they also wear due to thermal shock of turning on/off. Along with the rest of the electronics. but to have the heater filament fail is quite rare...

I have just my (11 inch, LED backlit) laptop screen, I suppose it uses maybe 10 watts at maximum brightness. I used to have a pair of 19" CFL LCD panels, I think those used about 35 watts each. About 1/3 of my old 22" CRTs. IBM t221 don't count

When I have the space and time I intend to get more monitors so I can set up my onyx again.. the energy use of the screens will be inconsequential relative to the energy used by the machine itself
