Dual Heads on Tezro tower

Unread postby spoonified » Wed Dec 29, 2010 9:26 am

I am just wondering if anyone has done this before and if so how did it work out. Since the Tezro towers have to XIO slots it looks like it would be easy to add a 2nd vPro card with alittle bit of case modification. The biggest concerns that come to mind on attempting this would be load on the power supply and if the vPro cards draw more or less power then the XIO option cards which are available for the Tezro. Would appricate any input on this and might attempt doing this at a later time.

Thanks,
Spoon

Outside of power requirements, the most significant issue will be physically fitting a V12 into the opening in the chassis bulkhead. A few rough measurements would seem to suggest a second V12 would have sufficient clearance from the existing primary graphics board to fit into the second XIO slot <although the heat sink on the secondary V12 would overlap at least the lowest PCI slot>. However, fitting the board would require the installer to cut away a portion of the rear chassis bulkhead and PCI retention gate, or remove the BNC connectors for the sync and genlock ports <from the secondary V12>.

Compare the position of the BNC connectors on the primary V12 to the existing chassis bulkhead opening for the second XIO slot - where the DM3 option board <marked LVDS> is currently positioned:

The extra board I have is a V10 and the one I currently have installed is a V12, I don't see any issues software wise mixing the two models. What I am thinking I am going to do to try this is removed the BNC connectors from the board, I also have a slighly modified faceplate off of an old video card from my pc which actually lines up with the DVI port on the V10 card and the slot on the chassis.

We'll look forward to hearing hearing how it went.

Since you're breaking new ground on this mod, some photos of the modded V10 and it's placement in the Tezro chassis would be greatly appreciated by anyone who might want to follow your lead.

On a similar note, nekcohan exists as an information source because of freely shared information. We don't currently have a detailed hinv post for a 1GHz Tezro - you could help our efforts by posting the following in the Hinv forum: "hinv -vm", "/usr/gfx/gfxinfo -v", "l1cmd serial all" <obscure the last few serial number digits if you like> and "l1cmd env" <with the system fully up to operational temperatures>, "l1cmd flash status" and "scsicontrol -i /dev/scsi/*".

I will be throwing that hinv etc up this afternoon. Just got the system online about 30 minutes ago. I will be doing the mods tomorrow and will post pictures once I am done.

Thanks,
Spoon

Great - thanks.

Whether or not the L1 controller will have the ability to detect and environmentally monitor the second graphics board is one of the questions you're about to answer. If an l1cmd env suggests the system is running more than a few degrees warmer, you might consider is adding a PCI slot cooler directly above the V10. The V12 has two thermally controller cooling fans in the fan wall - the PCI fans in the fan wall will blow across the added V10, but if needed the slot cooler might add a little extra boost.

I just put the card in and it didn't work, it looks like the L1 console reconized that it was a GFX board and wouldn't allow me to start the system because the system doesn't have the proper cooling and can't meet the power requirements. This is what I got out of the l1 console:

spoonified - thanks for being the pioneer on this one - even if it didn't work out.
