Am I crazy? Or can you not mix R10k with Extreme graphics? How is it that they have an R10k tag on a teal system?

Looks like the insides have been replaced and only the old Teal outside remains. Never tried it personally but I don't see why EXtreme graphics wouldn't work.

The only limits were with POWER R8k systems - they can't do IMPACT.

Any R10k and any R4k (with a suitable PROM and version of IRIX) can do any version of XL, Express (XZ/EXtreme), or IMPACT.

SGI did sell original R10K Extremes (I've seen them) or field upgraded R4Ks to R10K. I obtained a few
once, teal Extreme with R10K badge. Extreme was cheaper than IMPACT, so a handy option for those
who just wanted the CPU power, and Extreme is actually sometimes better than Solid for wireframe.

My suspicion is that SGI probably pulled EXtreme shortly after the introduction of Solid IMPACT, though - it must have been more expensive to do those GE7 MCMs and 3-board EXtreme sets than it was to do a Solid.

Although I suppose they could have dropped their profit margin on EXtreme, though.

No way, Jose ! We'd rather go bankrupt than drop our profit margins !

Oh. Right.

I even sold an R10K/195 Extreme once, to a guy who wanted the CPU muscle but didn't want to risk
sw incompatibility with the newer gfx (I think his data viz app was IrisGL). He'd been using an R4K/200
before, so the speedup was considerable.

Ian.

PS. Think you hit the nail on the head, hamei...
