oh yeah :)

I see your cpu heat sink is facing properly!!

but where's your scsi cable ;)

mine is running nice now... env working, rpm reading... my sound card is in my abberated 66mhz slot -(thats two lower) but IT WORKS

think I might cable my L1 to the rear and use a dummy slot plate to give me external RS232-L1 control

FINAL SYNOPSIS:

h5k9 is (0), l1d8 is (1), an c7b4 is (2)

ALL IS WELL, the env problem was solved!!
ensuring heat sink on cpu is oriented like the picture jan-jaap shows
lowered cpu by 10 degrees.. his photo is the way my heatsinks look now!

it is do-able with off-the shelf heat gun and exact replacement parts from another vendor... believe that the first series of dallas chips were buggy and that current date production I got are great. I also believe the heat sink issue was just not paying attention in manufacture.

If only I had the "proper" rework equipment it would have been flawless..
but it was worth it even primitively done.

FINALLY Serial # for system is in 8 pin socketed IC just beside rear fan connector
and it is a CRYPTO CHIP MEMORY

LOL - glad to see somebody tried this. Hamei sent me pics of his board a long time ago, and it looked like the swap was easy.

FINAL NOTE:

when changing these IC's BEWARE and ensure that all legs of all ics are connected and NOT SHORTED... as in this machine I lost the sn chip due to stray solder... and the sn chip is CRYPTO-MEMORY so

IF YOU ATTEMPT to FIX the envionmental monitoring by changing these ic's check connections BEFORE power up.

ALSO IT SEEMS that it was the early dallas chips that were the problematic ones.

UPDATE: - AUG 2008

System strong as ever. Have been running since Jan 2007, no problems with temp, fans or environment. System has gotten dirty... ready for a cleaning.

Wanted to let all know that this IS THE SOLUTION for the env woes of the SGI FUEL.
:D

UPDATE - FEB 2009

STILL GOING... :)

Will the motherboard on the +12 V power supply monitor chip is just what?
My computer is only prompted to 12V supply voltage reduction.
I want to maintain control in the minimum range.
Looking forward to answer.

Guess I don't understand your question ba8dz...

IF you could be more specific as to what is the problem

I know it has been some weeks since the last input to this thread but I guess what ba8dz wants to know is whether you know which of the three chips monitors the 12V power supply voltage because his env monitor only complains about that and nothing else and he wants to keep soldering to a minimum.

As I just replaced my power supply just to find that my Fuel keeps complaining about the aux voltage I stumbled across this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16722269

and your thread so I figured I might as well answer.

Cheers,

Frank

BTW: Since I will not attempt to replace the chips (because I would not succeed) I just switched env monitoring off. This will solve the sporadic shutdown issue I hope. Of course it will fry the machine once there is a real power or fan problem biut on the other hand me trying to solder this would too :-)

Some local electronics (repair) shops will do that kind of work for you if you provide the parts and info.

It has been quite awhile but I am sure it is the H5K9 that does the 12v monitoring... it is next to the cpu module connector and I believe that the reason this one was affected is due to transient heat of the CPU module, in addition to the component batch.

Possible. Heat does weird things to electronics. I had a system with an overheating cpu that tripped an ambient sensor (reported -127C).

it wasn't the plastic duuuude!!!! Could have been more like the toluene in the pcb cleaner.
Though not intentionally done to get loopy.
