We do have some new "young" members as you put it.

I'm 14, LarBob is 16. Not sure about others, but I think it's safe to say that even if there is at some point a silent switchover where the majority of Nekochan users learned what SGI was only after they were acquired (after all, I was only 7 years old in 2009), that's no reason to assume everyone will simply forget about SGI. There's plenty of interest in old Apple stuff from people who weren't alive when it came out, same with video games. SGIs might be a bit more niche, but they always have been. Even this Wired article from 2004, (which talks about Nekochan) describes it as a niche community, and back then IRIX was still getting updates!

So, no, I don't think we're all doomed to sell all our SGIs to one really interested collector as everyone leaves the forum. Sure, people sell off their collections, but heck, a collection selloff was where I got my first SGIs a year or so ago, and every time someone does sell off their collection there's plenty of talk of people buying systems and starting their own collections. They don't disappear into a void, they start or expand other collections. Same with the Montreal lot I recently bought. The Octane2 I bought went to another Nekochanner rather than into my "corner of IP30". I chose to do so because I didn't need another Octane and could partially recover the cost of buying the lot by selling a piece, but the "grand scheme" side effect is that the system went to someone with fewer machines who did want an Octane. It balances out, and if someone wants to have a large collection, there's not so few SGIs in the world that a few avid collectors can inadvertently screw up the entire community.

It's great that people like you and LarBob have joined Nekochan and have such a keen interest in SGI. That definitely shows that there's hope in keeping this community alive. :D

I don't have a problem with avid collectors of SGI gear at all and certainly don't believe that they can or will inadvertently screw up the entire SGI community. In fact, I believe the opposite and would encourage it! I intend being an avid collector of SGI gear myself.

I absolutely realize that Nekochan is a niche community, and that's a good thing in my opinion! I suppose that I just wish that there was some way to get more of the registered members of this site to be active on a more frequent basis, that's all. :D

Why has the thread title changed? This makes no sense now as the OPs question was not this and none of the answers will make any sense.

I changed the thread title, as I realize that I probably asked the wrong question initially, considering the response I was getting.

I intended the thread to be constructive and hopefully with this title it will be.

You work so hard to get a decent collection together, why on earth would you part with it after all the effort you put in?
