Not a shoebox but egg cardboard boxes for better sound isolation!

Close :) The last motherboard was a D525 (had D510 & 230 boards even earlier on, there are some old threads on this). This is a J1900.

For some reason I always assumed that Nekochan was hosted on SGI hardware. Though that would be an expensive way of running a forum so in hindsight wouldn't make much sense :)

It was running on SGI hardware until 2009 or so.

Why did you switch from SGI ? For security reasons or electrical bill ? May I ask what upload rate do your ISP provide and at what price ? I wanted to do something similar at home (using my Octane 2) but getting a decent upload rate where I live is prohibitively expensive so I gave up... I would have gladly hosted a nekoware mirror if the whole thing went through.

Did these motherboards fail or was it something else?

You can always find out who's running what at netcraft, click in the what's that site running box and type in the URL...
Project:
Temporarily lost at sea...
Plan:
World domination! Or something...

Both. I ran two very loud O350s towards the end, and dealing with the noise and the increasingly difficult to keep up to date PHP/Apache/MySQL was getting out of hand. Plus they weren't very speedy as web servers go.

The circuit is business class SDSL, but very expensive - $200 a month.

Yes, the power regulation failed on the D525. The previous boards were replaced because I wanted to try newer ones.

And then there's the power consumption. I think an O350 module consumes around 250W, so running my two-module O350 at home where I have to pay €0,23 per kWh would cost about €1000 annually. That just crazy.

I s'pose you know, you have the world's most expensive electricity ? Even post-Enron California is only about a third that price. There must be a reason ?

I looked it up and it breaks down roughly like this:
43% is the cost for the electricity
17% transportation cost
40% taxes (VAT and environmental tax)

In Cali, it's about $0,17 per kWh so bit more than a third. In France it's about €0,13 (but we're all gonna die of radiation poisoning sooner or later LOL).

Pfft, I pay about $0.56/kWh (in the Bay Area in Cali) all told...
It's pretty insane.
