New font?

Unread postby SiliconClassics » Fri Aug 20, 2010 1:43 pm

Has there been a change to the Nekochan forum font, or is it just my browser? Seems like it's been switched to helvetica.

Doh! Never mind. I had installed Helvetica on my system the other day, and for some reason Firefox decided to use it to display forum text. I guess Firefox searches available system fonts to find the "best" match for any given web page. Deleting Helvetica from my system reverted the page display back to normal (looks like Arial maybe?)

I haven't made any changes on my end. Same forum, different day :)

I'm running Firefox 3.6.6 on WinXP SP2. Everything is back to normal now, though I'm saddened that I can't install Helvetica on my system without interfering with my web browser's page display.

It's a function of phpBB's cascading style sheets.

It looks like all the themes enabled on Nekochan specify Helvetica as preferred over Arial for at least some blocks of text. Since most people don't have Helvetica on their Windows machines, it's not usually an issue.

That makes sense. When I visit Nekochan on my Mac, the fonts display as Helvetica.

Which raises a question: why doesn't Windows include Helvetica by default? It's pretty much the most popular font ever created!

AFAIR, licensing/competition issues with Adobe/Linotype stretching back to the earliest days of TrueType vs PostScript.

That's right. This is why Windows 3.1 shipped with similar looking but different fonts made by Monotype: ``Arial'' as an Helvetica substitute, ``Courier New'' as a Courier substitute, and ``Times New Roman'' as a Times Roman substitute. I wonder why Arial did not get christened ``Helvetica New''...

Not that it matters much, since the only decent serif font is Garamond, of course

Arial sucks great time, its an ugly copy - just my 2 cents

BTW: Helvetica - the one and only - is Irix' and Mac OS X' default GUI font
And this is cool!

Helvetica is included in a default MacOS X installation, but, IIRC, Lucida Grande is the default GUI font on the Mac.

True - it's the Font on iPhone, but not for OSX - though it's preinstalled as system font in OS X and therefore used inside safari

Mac used to use the "Geneva" Helvetica wannabe. Better name, methinks. Why didn't MS call theirs Lucerne or Alpen? Ariel always puts me in mind of The Tempest

Under the sea, under the sea
Since life is sweet here
We got the beat here, naturally
Even the sturgeon and the ray
They get the urge and start to play
We got the spirit, you got to hear it
Under the sea
