I want clarification on this quoted section.
Was there more to the original message warranting this moderator addition, or was it a preemptive move to steer future posts in this thread? If it is the latter, does the orange box at the top of each page no do its job sufficiently?
I certainly see nothing in the original message about (1) Pirated Software or (2) offering to buy/sell/trade commercial software.
We, the people on this forum, buy hardware, and therefore also need associated software as well. I understand the rules with regards to commercial software, but I think they're a bit naïve. Let me give some examples:
- Tru64 - now totally unavailable to hobbyists. What are we to do? I don't expect this forum to encourage people to pay thousands of dollars for such software.
- HP-UX - license is tied to the machine. I certainly might have missed something, but what the heck is the problem with making a copy of HP-UX to install on another machine? I paid for the hardware (and therefore the license to run HP-UX) so what's the problem with a burning a couple CD-Rs for another forum member in the same situation?
I understand these forums cannot encourage the exchange of commercial software. I also understand there's not much way to discourage this exchange without moderating threads. I guess this is the crux of the matter.
Then again, I'd also like to see a thread or two about commercial software that aren't edited.
