Server Change: Wadatsumi

Unread postby nekonoko » Thu Oct 19, 2006 11:19 am

Just got the new 4x600MHz Origin 300 up and running; reverse DNS for the new machine name should propagate sometime today - some forum/PM notifications may bounce until then depending on your host's RDNS rules. I've been watching the logs and haven't seen any problems so far.

The the site may bounce a few times while I adjust some things - will need to flash the PROM to the latest at some point. Anyway, probably not that exciting to most :)

Yep - didn't take long to get up and running since I was moving from a similar machine (just a drive swap and some edits). It would have been even faster if I kept the old hostname (Mizuki), but since this is a completely new box I really wanted to change it to something else. It's an awesome box though - I'm going to have fun ;)

arrrrrgh

do you HAVE to have a faster 4-way o300 than me?

Oh if you want more RAM for it. I've a bunch of 512MB simms left over.

And... CONGRATS on the new arrival!! (is it a boy or a girl?)
Shall I describe it to you? Or do you want me to get you a box?

Heh, a good deal crossed my path and I had to jump on it :)

Ah thanks much for the offer, but both my Fuel and O300 are full of 512MB SIMMs at the moment. I'll need to step up to 1024MB SIMMs to go any further.

Thanks! It's a girl - named after the character "Wadatsumi" from the manga of the same name by Kotoyoshi Yumisuke. Scan of a cover with her on it:

Work from home, no problems :)

Also, looks like pageloading is faster too - good stuff!

Most of the time I do as well - telecommuting is a wonderful thing :)

Some of that is probably just bandwidth related; depends on what sort of file transfers are going on at the time. I did perform a few database cache tweaks this evening that should make the forum a tad faster though.

Finally added a second node to the system today; now up to 6x600MHz. For web server duty it's not really much of a change as most things are still process based and just grab a single CPU at a time. But it sure is nice getting the additional RAM out of the deal as 2GB memory kits are still prohibitively expensive (i.e. cost more than the second node did). Thanks go to The Keeper for the new toy :)
