Debian support remaining only for ppc64el

Unread postby Shiunbird » Tue Nov 01, 2016 6:45 am

Sad news, the Debian team has voted to remove support for ppc and ppc64. Only ppc64el will remain supported.

I was going to post about that. You had Debian running but when I checked their site they say only power8 was supported now. Suse support seems sketchy as you need to pay for updates? I thought maybe IBM maintained a distro but it appears not.

Well, there will be Jessie LTE (I'm still on Wheezy), and we will see.
I didn't go to Jessie because of problems with nouveau, but I rarely use it so I didn't follow up and I don't know what the status would be now.

Figures, I mean... not many people use pre-ppc64el. IntelliStation POWERs aren't aging well for support--in both AIX and Linux. ;)

Is NetBSD more flexible when it comes to Linux porting than AIX? Otherwise the same problems are inevitable.

SUSE Enterprise and Red Hat Enterprise have dropped support for the IntelliStations long ago, at least the 185, which is limited to these versions only:
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 SP3
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 Update 3

I've never found AIX all that flexible to port to from anything! :P

My spies are telling me there's some attempt to resurrect it as an unofficial port but that sounds like somebody's vanity project and not likely to be a longterm solution.
