Has anybody actually got one of those System 370 instruction set emulated in microcode using a 68000 add on boards to the IBM PC/AT?

I think they could run VM and MVS native....

I have been looking for a long long... time for one of these boards but they seem *extremely* rare (even rarer than an AlphaBook )

Anybody even hard of this?

The AT/370 (and PC/370) could only run a specially modified version of CMS.

Just seen on wiki the P/370 (Personal/370) a late 80's early 90's MCA card for the PS2.

Could run *complete* VM or MVS...

I suppose none now exist or knowing luck in some attic or dusty old never used machine ready to be binned...

I have a few. I'm not looking to part with them at this time.

The P/370 won't run standard releases of VM or MVS, they were releases specifically packaged for P/370 due to peculiarities of its support software and emulated host IO, and also to the lack of hardware support for 2K storage keys.

Seriously, you're much better off with Hercules anyway, especially since IBM has specifically granted hobbyists permission to run specific versions of software freely on Hercules only (this does not apply to the P/370 or any other "hardware" setup). Honestly so much of the P/370 environment is emulated anyway, you're "losing" very little by choosing Hercules and gaining a heck of a lot.

probably the best bet to get mainframe in real hardware (although still being really rare) is an MP3000

The MP3000 has serious problems for a home user. Primary among which, finding SE restore software, which is typically delivered pre-configured for your exact hardware configuration (and the tools to create a new hardware configuration from scratch thus removed); having the necessary PMI LIC disk to enable the processor(s); the necessary VPD disk(s) to enable other hardware features; and the difficulty in keeping the data arrays running. The disks are unique to this machine, and the RAID-5 for emulated storage is custom implemented in such a way as it will not operate in degraded mode. So if you lose a disk, you're done until you find a replacement.

But otherwise, yeah, I guess maybe.

For some reason I totally missed this reply. The company I worked for started on an IBM 360 and moved on to a 370, we have a source code listing for one of the early versions of the software we still sell today. It would be kind of fun to see if I could get it running today. I suppose there are emulators ?

Sure, there is the Hercules emulator and it works great. Somebody here even ported it to IRIX! But you still need an OS. IBM released OS/360 and MVS 3.8 and they are available on the net either as turnkey installations or roll-your-own sysgen. I did the sysgen and it worked out fine. Takes only an hour on a modern box. QEMU also has an S390 target but I haven't tried it and I don't believe you can run OS/360 or early MVS on it.

That would be me.

I built Hercules-390 3.6... but Hercules 3.7 has been released since. You need to take out all the Linux specific SCSI tape stuff and fiddle a little and it should build. My 16CPU o300 is out of the rack and in pieces ( viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16726601 ) and my Quad 1GHz build Tezro shares a monitor with my iOS build mac-mini and I don't even have the time to build revenue potential iOS apps right now.
