I'm bringing this into a new thread since the previous one went quite OT.
I have an IBM 7028-6C1 iterates through the "checkpoints" which are documented on page 30 (PDF page 48) of the service guide, and beeps, apparently trying to boot. When it fails, the whole process starts over again. It takes several minutes, but I'm confident the machine is with the living.
However, I still don't have any serial console access, using a known-good cable on serial port one on the rear of the unit. I've tried a multitude of baud rates with known-good cables on both serial ports 1 and 2 on the rear of the server, as well as the front-facing port.
Can someone who is somewhat familiar with this box help a brotha' out?
Thanks,
Alex

Re: RS/6000 pSeries 610 7028-6C1 serial console issues
Does this machine have the capability to connect to a HMC?
I setup a p520 (power6) and I had to reset the HMC settings before the serial console would work properly. Then it was 9600 N81.

I don't know, how do I tell. How did you reset it? I think I remember seeing something about HMC in the manual.
Re: RS/6000 pSeries 610 7028-6C1 serial console issues
Ethernet ports labeled HMC 1 and HMC 2 would be a give away. There is a minimal web interface available if you connect a machine to one and you can reset from there if I recall correctly. Check the manuals.
Once I did that it came up on the serial port just fine.

Re: RS/6000 pSeries 610 7028-6C1 serial console issues
In that case, I'm pretty sure it doesn't have it. What I wouldn't give for a "reset CMOS" jumper right about now

Re: RS/6000 pSeries 610 7028-6C1 serial console issues
My 7028-6C1 has 3 serial ports on the back, numbered 1,2 and 3.
I connected to port 1 with serial cable, I used a null modem to a Linux box running minicom. The settings as reported by minicom:
With the machine powered off, but connected to the power, the service processor can be activated with a carriage return.
Selecting menu option 2 takes it through to the power control.
Selecting 4 and answering "y" will power the machine up.
Then an odd line while it has a think
Finally launches into the business of the day.
Then you can login and shutdown.
Finally, sending carriage return will give you the service processor menu.
