That small rounded slot means that it is parity ram, standard 72pin will fit but mostlikely not work. This is also obvious because there will be an odd number of chips on the actual PCB.

I have just checked against my 550 and my 320 (which use the same 8-slot memory boards). The SIMMs are indeed 72 pin but with a very small, rounded, notch in the middle. So while ``regular'' SIMMs may work with these RS/6000 systems, the reverse is not possible.

No, no, no. I have tried RS/6000 SIMMS (7012/370 and 7030/3CT type) in several other machines (including SGIs) and they do not function. The IBM modules are proprietary (I think there were a couple of RS/6000s that did use standard 72-pin modules, but these are not the ones). They are 40-bits wide and have a different pinout from "ordinary" parity 72-pin SIMMs as used in Indigo2, Indy and many Alphas.

BTW the edge notch is different as well. If you expand the edge notch it will physically fit in a 72-pin SIMM board but will not function.

Weird, I pulled the 72pin parity simms out of my R4k Indigo to get this running and they work.
