The c8000 was marketed as "whisper quiet", and there was a nice brochure that said joked it had "taken a vow of silence"

As UNIX workstations go its nice - quiet but still very powerful (2-4 cores, 32Gb max RAM, 4 x SCSI U320 disks, bays for DVD, tape etc., gigabit, onboard USB). The only disadvantage is that v2 and v3 of HP-UX were never ported to it, so as a HP-UX platform it is missing some interesting innovations available in later releases.

I've got a c8000 with 2 x dual core 1.1GHz, 32Gb RAM, 4 x U320 15k disks, and various cards like audio, quad gigabit installed, but I haven't gotten a graphics card yet. Having read the above, I really must check out the power usage some day :-o

Mine has a FireGL-UX, which I'm quite sure doesn't help the power consumption any.

PA-RISC is/was a very clean architecture, sort of a RISC without unnecessary compromise.
But it was too expensive, and didn't have the software support, outside of relatively small niches ($$).
To be candid: you have to really like HP/UX, otherwise you won't do a lot with it (yet another linux box?) and it'll be a doorstop.

I don't have any experience with HP/UX, but would love to try.

Honestly, I had no previous experience with AIX either, and what I've learned playing with it made me a far better professional even dealing with generic Linux/Windows boxes at work. I guess every single platform you get in touch with gives you XP points that make troubleshooting bizarre things easier.
