gonna spend the day at Venix(,) beach(es)

Unread postby ClassicHasClass » Thu Mar 16, 2017 8:17 pm

This is really just to rub it in to poor old smj, but I did get that video cable together, and now I have a working DEC Professional 380 system with a somewhat flaky VR201 monitor and a LK201 keyboard running ... Venix!

Here it is booted and running:

And here's the uname from the console, once I blanked the root password from maintenance mode:

I am sad not to apparently have Venix install media, just manuals, but the hard disk in this thing is working great. However, the monitor seems to have a loose connection and needs a bit of, um, back of the hand encouragement.

The first LK201 keyboard I tried just displayed four red LEDs and the machine complained about an error with Device ID: 000001. Is the keyboard shot? Fortunately I had a second and that works just dandy.

This thing is a tank but it's fun. Too bad Venix doesn't support networking, just UUCP. Maybe that's an excuse to set up a machine around here for that.
smit happens.

(I do have P/OS floppy disks, but I think I'll keep Venix on it. It's a fun old Unix.)

Jim S is going to get me an MFM emulator and we'll see if we can get this bad boy imaged.

That said, I'm not sure what to make of the LK201 with the red LEDs. Is it just shot?

That sounds like a fine idea. I need a few of those - even have a kit for one around here somewhere...

I'm certain we just treated them as "swapable," in that there were plenty around and somebody had a service contract, so we just swapped out any LK201's with issues like that.

Which doesn't answer your question. I'm sure somebody somewhere has actually gone to the effort of fixing one. If you're so inclined, it would be a fine topic for the classiccmp mailing list. Tony Duell ought to have some tips even if nobody else does. Not to mention the folks on comp.os.vms or comp.sys.dec (little activity there).
