I didn't see this until the next day and AFTER I discovered that myself.

So the first issue was the new SCSI cable was bad so I swapped that out, jumpered the hard drive for internal termination and it magically appeared again. Still couldn't get things to behave, though. ;)
THEN I realized that it was atually no longer complaining about anything on the SCSI bus but in fact soemthing on the ATA bus, or rather what it could NOT see. SRM could see the CD drive but once Tru64 took over it vanished and it began freaking out. I ran out and grabbed a Toshiba SCSI drive and tried that. Blammo. We're up. Uplugged that and reconnected all the SCSI devices. We were FINALLY getting somewhere!

Okay, so I think I can handle it from here but one last question? Which version is more preferred? 4.0f or 5.1? The 4.0f installer was ready in a few minutes. With the 5.1 installer it's been 20 minutes and it's STILL not ready.

then there's still something wrong. boot time from the 5.1 cd should be just like a very slow disk but 20min is way too long unless you have a 0.001x cdrom :P

The Nakamichi is a 16x drive. :P
It eventually went ready and is installing now. The drive just went glacial once 5.1 started up. It was fine otherwise.

Either 4.0f or 5.1 will work (5.1B-something is better), but 5.1 is slightly less outdated.

Glad you figured things out. Another "gotcha" that sometimes "gotscha" is that the slots on Alphas are not always completely interchangeable. If you're getting weird issues sometimes another slot will clear them up.

I like your taste in keyboards.

The DEC types may be sharpening their pitchforks, but I actually prefer the Model M. It doesn't get much better than model M, older SGIs, or the Apple Extended ADB keyboard.

Yeah, the LK401 is really mushy. I actually have a NMB Hi-Tek keyboard with the same layout, but it isn't compatible with any computer I have.

I'm one of those freaks that doesn't care what keyboard he uses, so long as it is not:

-A Duobook keyboard
-A membrane keyboard (Atari 400, ZX81, those rubber USB keyboards you can roll up and carry in a pocket)

I've never really understood this weird fascination for people becoming so attached to various brands of keyboards.

The difference is that some people have learned to touch type.

edit:
it does seem bizarre that there are subcultures of keyboard collectors, because they're just peripherals and are pretty boring compared to the engineering that went into computers. that also makes them easier to understand, without lots of involved CS edjumacation. the appeal of something tangible in a virtual world.

It's like photography compared to lomography.

because if you have to use it all day, every day, you really have to like it. it's just like walking around in a pair of shoes that don't fit
