Hinote Ultra II

Unread postby zahal » Tue Dec 17, 2013 10:34 pm

Found a Hinote Ultra II for dirt cheap. Turned out to be a 133MHz version, with 32MB ram and 1.3GB drive. Windows 95 is installed, but it seems to be missing some drivers.
Battery and floppy drive seems to be dead, and unfortunately the top trackball button seems to be dead too. I need to dissasemble it and figure if it's something easy to fix.
I'll post pics tomorrow with better light.
Always wanted one of these since they came out. I remember NeXTSTEP ran on these. That would certainly be a better option than Win95, but I'm almost sure I'd need more RAM for that.
Then again, I have OS/2 server 4 (really OS/2 3 with networking). Could try Antix too.
But the main problem is getting the floppy up and running since it seems to be the only way to install another OS. I don't have the CD dock thingie (although I have a PCMCIA DVD). There's a PCMCIA boot option on the BIOS, but it seems to be of little or no help at all.
Just popped a SD memory (128MB) in a PCMCIA adapter, Win95 recognized it as a IDE drive, but there's no drive letter assignment....so I can't seem to access the files on the memory in order to install some drivers.....
Sitting in a room.....thinkin' shit up.

Is it formatted in FAT16 or FAT32? Win95 can't read FAT32 volumes.

Thanks, that was it. I had that memory in a camera so I thought it still had FAT16, but I must have formatted it into FAT32 recently.

I loved the Hinote Ultras from the day I first saw one circa 1992-3. I've got one or two floating around somewhere. Batteries are a problem, but secondary to the problem of getting an operating system on them. I don't think the multimedia dock with CD player will help there, as I don't think you can boot from it. Could be wrong... I have an Adaptec SCSI PCMCIA card in a box somewhere that was supposed to help with that.

I hadn't heard that NeXTstep will run on them. Hmm... When I picked up mine, you could still get the SIMMs reasonably cheaply at MemoryX, I think it was.

I remember reading about NeXTSTEP on those Hinotes, but at the time I ran it on black hardware.
Here's a link I found just now that I've been searching about the Hinote:

And here's another interesting site covering battery rebuilding, overclocking, clearing cmos password, and other stuff:

edit> Here's a pic of my Hinote Ultra II, with a Xircom pcmcia wired ethernet card and a Trackman Marble FX.
