rust oleum gloss red and flat 'trim' black. I am glad I didn't paint the face plate, contrary to everybody - who thinks otherwise. The ridge between black and red is only noticable when the light is just right: that photo was taken to emphasize that flaw, but you will never see it in real life. And black and red are my school colors!

I also added a few snapshots of my PCs. I don't think anybody here really cares, but I like them. (and it tickles me that my desktop and laptop match - the same 'design language')

Can't find decsystem-1020 gear anymore, which is what I really loved. The emulator isn't the same thing, although it's nice to run tops-20 now and again.

You seem to have done them all! Where did you run in to 1020 systems?

A friend, the lucky bastard, got a DECsystem-2020 last year.

i worked at DEC on 10's and 20's, as well as VAX. the 11/750 was mine, i had swapped for some detailed information on HSC50's to a 3rd party company.
i spent my life during the mini computer age reverse engineering hardware for DEC and IBM mainframe gear.

the 2020 is an ideal system for hobbiest. there are very few still about.

There are a handful of those going on a Swedish auction site for about 400$, is that a decent price?

Depends on the specs. I just bought a C8000 myself with the following specs:

Code: Select all

2x PA8900's 1 Ghz 64MB Cache
8GB Ram (8x 1GB)
4x 73GB 15,000RPM
ATI FireGL X3-256MB
Philips soundcard

The price I paid was 200CAD +45CAD shipping.

I'd say I got a smoking deal :)

It looks like there's quite a few C8000 owners on here now :)

Thank god no! I did email him, apparently he has a skid full of them and is just trying to get rid of them. I thought about it,but i couldn't get over the Cadillac badge upfront. I have a feeling he's going to have those for a while.

This was one on eBay in Canada. it was the last one they had, I missed the auction by seconds, emailed them and bought it. arrived way better then what they had advertised (came with X3-256, they had it advertised as a T2, 8900's insted of 8800's and 15k drives insted of 10k drives) and included the base and keys. came in amazing condition very few scratches.

^hmm if he's trying to get rid of them...the blue cases sure do look nice :) Considering your ram and extra gear in the box you got a very good deal :)

Yup, and I've already ordered upgraded ram for it.... i got 8x2gb dimms for $25/dimm how i wish 1gb octane dimms were this cheap.
Hopefully the wife doesn't find out :)

All I've got in the way of HP/Compaq is some generic x86 stuff...

HP Vectra VL400 (866MHz Pentium 3, 256MB RAM, 40GB hard drive, Windows Server 2003)
HP NetServer LC2000 (600MHz Pentium 3, 512MB RAM, 6x9GB SCSI LVD hard drives in a RAID5 array for 45GB, Windows Server 2003)
A generic Compaq I forget the model of (866MHz Pentium 3, 256MB RAM, 15.3GB hard drive, Windows 98 SE)

What do you use to connect them? Ethernet?

Actually, I'm still looking into that. At the moment I'm investigating the possibility of using FC (2 Gbps) as a cluster interconnect (although I can only find documented references to storage solutions). I'm also considering U320 SCSI, since rx2600s come with an LVD/SE on-board port (and I have plenty of cables and extra controller cards, if needed). 1000BASE-TX ethernet would be my last choice, unless it'd turn out to be ideal compared to the rest. (By the way, for ethernet, I assume I'd need at least one RJ45 patch/cross-over cable? Which I fortunately have here.)

The thing to keep in mind for VMSclusters is that there is two kinds of traffic: storage traffic (to the disks/filesystems) and cluster traffic between the computers as they keep things going smoothly and balanced. Most interconnects only offer one or the other, really it's only CI, DSSI (old DEC-proprietary, generally VAX interconnects) and LAN that can multiplex both onto the same interface, and the LAVAC (LAN), while convenient, is not the most efficient (the storage devices aren't peers, so the computers spend time dealing with remote storage requests).

What you'd do is cluster your disks over FC and then use Ethernet or another cluster interconnect for the cluster traffic. It's easier and slicker than it sounds, and then your storage traffic is off of your Ethernet network.

While I'm more experienced with Alpha and VAX setups, I'm not sure that SCSI was supported very well as an interconnect. For Alphas you can use a couple of SCSI cards, but cable length limitations as well as the difficulty of using more than two hosts (especially in light of the benefits of FC) meant that SCSI support is for a very small number of generally early cards (NCR 53C710-based and a couple of HVD cards).

For Alphas the slickest approach was FC+Memory Channel, but I don't think that's an option for Itanium.
