Is it Solaris 1.0 ?

Unread postby escimo » Sun Sep 10, 2017 4:56 am

I had big luck to get an ISO image which possibly contains SunOS 4.1.1 for eg. sun3x (Sun-3/80).
The interesting part is, that this could be Solaris 1.0 release. Is that confirmed? I only nowing the tape version.

Sun did call at least some versions of SunOS 4 "Solaris 1." However, it has really very little to do architecturally with Solaris in the strictest sense and I always found that confusing/obnoxious.
smit happens.

I read about the SunOS 4.1.1_U1 branded "Solaris 1.0" after Solaris 2.x was released and it was shipped only on CD-ROM, but this version seems to be more a base 4.1.1. At this point I have to proof/validate this...

So you're right, at the core it's the SunOS 4.1.1 (BSD based) and has less in common with SysV-based SunOS 5.x versions

Solaris 1.x is a marketing name for bundled SunOS 4.x + OpenWindows. SunOS 5 wasn't sold separately from Solaris 2.

I'm not sure what the question is?

According to Bill Calkins' "History of Solaris," the last release of BSD-based SunOS was 4.1.4, the first Solaris release (he doesn't mention a version number) was based on SVR4:

That's all correct. The term "Solaris" is a combination of SunOS 5.x (SysV based) + ONC Notworking + Windows Environment, versioning beginning from 2.0. SunOS 4.1.x was the main OS line for the new SPARC architecture of that time, Solaris 2.0 was still in development. For transition from BSD Unix to SVR4 marketing relabeled some SunOS 4.1.x releases with Solaris 1.x. In fact Solaris 2.0 was a development only release for sun4c w/o SMP capabilities (source: Solaris Internals)

From a historic point of view I was interested in the fact if the image is the one containing the later renamed/rebranded/relabeled "Solaris 1.0", which was only distributed on CD-ROM media.

This not seems to be the fact. Nevertheless interessting...

SunOS 4.1.1 CD includes binaries for all platforms

Source:http://www.tucows.apollo.lv/ftp/unix/sun-info/sunflash/1993/May/52.00-April-1993-Table-Of-Contents

So first SunOS 4.1.1 Revision B (alias SunOS 4.1.1_U1) seems to be the relabeled "Solaris 1.0".
I saw CD-ROM labeled "Solaris 1.0.1" (SunOS 4.1.2) but never a CD-ROM labeled "Solaris 1.0".

Yeah. I have the 1.0.1 disc, which is, as you say, 4.1.2 + OW v2.(something). I haven't personally seen a 1.0; 4.1.1_U1 seems like the right SunOS release.

OpenWindows was unbundled for SunOS 4, except with Solaris 1.x. I'd say if your disc has any version of OpenWindows on it, it probably is an image of some Solaris 1.x disc, and that at this time "1.0" would represent an unproven best guess about which version specifically.

If it has no OpenWindows, it's not Solaris.
