Sun Blade 2500 Bellerophon multicard

Unread postby Stellaris » Sun Feb 26, 2017 7:47 am

Hi folks in a couple of days I will be the owner of a Sun blade 2500 silver :D . Honestly this will be my first approach to such great machine so I am a newbie,   but I am a very enthusiastic guy. This forum is a mine of wonderful informations and I hope to share with you my experiences. I start with a question. The Sun comes with a fresh installed Solaris 10. There is also a Bellerophon multicard. The seller told me that there is a procedure to get the multicard recognizable by the system. Right now he told me that on the back there is a blinking light that means that the card is recognised by the system and when the drivers are installed the light will turn on fix green.
Any advice (step by step newbie procedure) is really appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

I don't own anything Sun (waiting for my work to decommission a few boxes), but welcome to the group!

Hopefully someone will come to assist you, and I'm sure you can find rare goods here for trade as well if you need.

Dear Shiunbird, thanks for your welcome. Looking around the forum it is very interesting, with a lot of competent and enthusiastic people.
About the bellerophon multicard I was not able to find around the web any manual or instructions how to install it.
I really hope someone will point me to the right direction.
Have a great day to everybody.

Well, I'll admit I've never heard of a "Bellerophon multicard". My curiosity got the better of me, and a Google search turned up only one on-topic reference. According to this blog, it's a SunPCi III card. Now, that's something I have heard of! If you search for it by that name, you'll find lots of info including the official Sun manual. There's even info about the SunPCi cards right here in the Nekochan forums.

Good luck with it!

Dear jpstewart,
when I saw your message my heart was just pumping at a very fast speed.
I went through the suggested blog and I got also precious info in the Nekochan forum.
What was clear to me was that the first step was to install the Sunpci3 multicard ito the system.
I downloaded the compressed file SUNWspci3.tar.Z from http://www.neurotica.com/misc/SunPCi/.
Then I uncompressed the Z file into the /tmp directory the Z file getting the tar file. I checked the file permissions that are 777.
Then I used the command pkgadd -d /tmp/SUNWspci3.tar. This should install the card.
I have this error: "Error. attempt to process datastream failed".
Googling it seems that can be a problem of file integrity. I tried with other Z file downloaded from http://www.neurotica.com but it is always the same.
Any suggestions? Someone may have a different site from where download those files? Maybe the installer cd image.
Thank a lot

Can you pkgadd from a tar? I think you have to un-tar that first.

I have some updates.
I succeeded to install the software, below the steps.
The SUNWspci3.tar.Z is uncompressed and the .tar extracted into /Documents folder;

pkgadd -d /Documents

(pkgadd found SUNWspci3 and start to install the drivers)
(I got one first error that the sunpcidrv.2100 is missing)

Googling I found the solution:

cd /opt/SUNWspci3/drivers/solaris/
ln -s sunpcidrv.280 sunpcidrv.2100
ln -s sunpcidrv.280.64 sunpcidrv.2100.64

Then you have to install the last patch 118591-04.zip to fix the millennium bug. Uncompress the zip file and then:

patchadd /var/spool/patch/118591-04

Now I can start the SunPCi software and is possible to create the the disk.image (in several flavour from dos, linux, winxp/2000).
But during the creation of the virtual disk I got this error message:

File Selection Error
Directory does not exist

The yellow blinking led of the card become fixed and nothing happen.
Any suggestions?
What means. "Directory does not exist"?
help, please!

Is there a verbose flag that you could enable on sunpci to see what it is actually trying to access?

Do you have this program:

/opt/SUNWspci/bin/vold_floppy_disable

If you do, make sure SunPCi is not running, and run that program. Restart SunPCi windows. What happens?

Solved!
The chipset via vt8235 on the SUNPci is burned!
See the pictures. Is any chance that I can replace it? I think that It is just a waste of time but I would like your opinion.

Why would you want to replace it? Replace it with what? :?: :?: :?:

You'd need a BGA rework station
:O3x02L: R16000 700MHz 8GB RAM kanna
:Octane: R12000 300MHz SI 896MB RAM yuuka
:Octane2: R12000A 400MHz V6 2.5GB RAM
:Indy: (Acclaim) R4600 133MHz XL Graphics 32MB RAM
:Indy: (Challenge S) R4600 133MHz (MIPS III Build Server)

I am probably posting from yangxiaolong, HP Z230 with Xeon E3-1230v3, 16GB RAM, GeForce 750ti, and running NetBSD and Windows 8.1 Embedded.
