Debian 7.11 sparc: Dual Creator 3D configuration ?

Unread postby yungjoon » Sun Nov 06, 2016 1:42 am

Hi,

I installed a Xfce debian 7.11 with my Ultra60, the two creator 3D seem to be recognized, a desktop is displayed on each output.
But I am stuck on only one desktop, I can't move the pointer to the other desktop.

There are no Xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/.

Anyone has an idea about a way to access both desktops ?

Thanks ...

Does it matter which edge you try to move the cursor off? Sometimes the monitor physically is on the wrong side of what Xorg thinks...
Also, what is the output of 'xrandr'?

Hi,

xrandr shows only one output and something like 1280x1024 at 960Hz (crazy frequency!). There is a problem in driver installation but I don't see how it is set, there si no Xorg.conf file...

How about the log file?

Code: Select all

/var/log/Xorg...

does it tell you anything?

The two creator graphics are ok, under solaris 10 I can have two displays and I can travel the pointer between the two desktops.

Any idea ?...

Re: Debian 7.11 sparc: Dual Creator 3D configuration ?

Well, since nobody's offered any better advice, here's my two cents worth!

To get a dual-head setup working correctly, you'll absolutely need to create an xorg.conf file in /etc/X11. Here are some bits from my own dual-head system (although it's an Intel-based one) with relevant info from your log file substituted in, to get you started:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier  "device0"
   Driver      "sunffb"
   BusID       "SBUS:/SUNW,ffb@1e,0"
   ...
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier  "device1"
   Driver      "sunffb"
   BusID       "SBUS:/SUNW,ffb@1d,0"
   ...
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier  "monitor0"
   ...
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier  "monitor1"
   ...
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier  "screen0"
   Device      "device0"
   Monitor     "monitor0"
   ...
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier  "screen1"
   Device      "device1"
   Monitor     "monitor1"
   ...
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier  "layout"
   Screen      0 "screen0" 0 0
   Screen      1 "screen1" RightOf "screen0"
   ...
EndSection

Replace all the ...s with whatever is necessary for you setup. Unfortunately, you'll probably have to spend some time reading the xorg.conf man page to complete the above to make something usable on your configuration. The main points, though, are that you need a Device section with appropriate BusIDs (taken from your posted log) for each graphics card, and a Monitor section for each, two screen sections each associating one Device with one Monitor, and a single ServerLayout section telling xorg how to place the two screens relative to each other. (RightOf in my example can also be LeftOf, Above, or Below depending on how your monitors are arranged.) You might need to add InputDevice sections for you mouse and keyboard, too, and then add them to the ServerLayout.

You'll also have to decide whether or not you want to run in Xinerama mode where the two physical screens are treated as one large logical display and you can drag windows between them (but sometimes end up with windows/applications spanning the two). Without it, applications will stay on the screen they're started on and can't be dragged across. Try both, and see what works for you. To have two distinct screens add:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerFlags"
   Option   "Xinerama" "off"
EndSection

That's how I run my multi-head setups. Then you can start applications on one screen or the other by setting DISPLAY=:0.0 or DISPLAY=:0.1 before launching them.

I hope this helps get you going in the right direction. Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for your help, will try to rebuild a xorg.conf file from yours.

Anyone have a xorg.conf file from a debian install on his ultrasparc/creator3D config ? It would be the easiest way to correct my file.

Hi,
I would like to stop temporarely the X server to execute xorg command (I have xfce destop). Is there a simple way to do this ?

I tried:

/etc/init.d/gdm stop || /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop || /etc/init.d/kdm stop || /etc/init.d/xdm stop || /etc/init.d/lightdm stop

It stops X server but don't switch to prompt.
