I just finished building my SS20 a few months ago. Started with a SS5/170 chassis that has the full height drive bay (replaced the badge). I ended up with 2 x SM81s in mine. I have 2 ROSS 250Mhz CPUs but they aren't even in the same league when using the system as a desktop compared to the SM81s. For awhile I used the SX graphics with an 8mb VSIMM, but the library/driver that supports it in X11 is a bit flaky I found when running newer software. However, I was able to obtain an Fujitsu AG10e and it is rock solid and just as fast. Gives me the side benefit of being able to max the RAM to 512mb. I run Solaris 9 with the latest patch bundle (yeah good luck finding it now) and use BlackBox as the windowing system. Very nice little box and I'm amazed at how beautifully it multitasks. There are no heat issues with the SM81s, in fact they run cooler overall than the ROSS processors. Doubt I'll ever get rid of it.

I've got myself an SS5 but not really sure of the spec's since I have not powered it on in quite some time. It came with the matching SUN 19" monitor, keyboard and mouse, I do know I loaded Solaris 8 on it.

Hmm I have 4 in mine that I had put in by mistake from a larger pile of memory and they worked. Next time I open the bugger I'll check the part numbers for clues. [Which ROM where you on by the way? I've only used 2.25 and 2.25r]

I just popped one in to see what would happen, noted the errors and took it out again.

No extra cooling - the Ross 200MHz CPU modules are single-width (model HMx4D-512), and the RasterFlex framebuffer is single as well, so there's quite a bit of empty space in the chassis. I didn't see any temperature advisories for that config in the MBus guide, and I've run the system for several days without problems, so hopefully no further MBus cooling is required (I did recently purchase an extra 1" fan for the HDD bay, though).

At any rate, the machine has been safely packaged in a temperature-controlled storage unit for the past three years, so it's a comfortable 72 degrees all year round. Can't wait to unpack it and shoot a video about it.

Yes! I want to see this 24bit rasterflex in action!

Who doesn't love pizza? Suns got deployed in many places and roles, so many people have a lot of memories associated with their desktop/deskside gear. (I won't say all those memories are fond... ;) )

I picked up an SS10 for NextStep from leaknoil a while back. Have another SS10 in storage with an SM52X - spent a lot of time trying to find a compatible SM52X for a max config of the SS10 platform, but never got the right part. Have an SS20 with something like SM71s in, but I have a pair of SM91's that I ran in there a few times. Needs more work, didn't get it stable enough to benchmark them.

Nice to see a classic restored and serving a purpose. Kind of reminds me of the old MACs I'm restoring for some serious retro gaming lol
