To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. (IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report)

Well they say the deal should be done by summer now, so we'll have to wait and see just how it ends up. Oracle/HP partnership seems pretty strong I think the Sun hardware business is of questionable value at this point...

No cisco buy :) looks like someone lost a bet.

Wonder will Oracle keep developing BRTFS for Linux now that they own (Open)Solaris and ZFS, given that I use OpenSolaris as my laptop OS I'm curious what's gonna happen over next year.

Given that they have Solaris now they might drop their respin of RHEL (Unbreakable Linux? -- there's an oxymoron)

Has Larry ever heard of IBM ? The people who invented the language his company is based on ?

Oracle / Sun vs IBM is a lot nicer to contemplate than IBM stripping Sun then leaving the bones out for the vultures tho.

Its funny you say that. I was out with two long time Oracle guys a few weeks back, and any time the IBM/Sun deal was mentioned they kept on bringing up Oracle. Perhaps I failed to read between the lines.

This acquisition actually makes a lot of sense, certainly far more than IBM. It is going to be interesting times ahead. Now ORACLE can offer a full stack: HW, OS, DB, Middleware/App SW, Services.

ORACLE has supreme marketing, and SUN has some very very good technology... they will most certainly be giving IBM a run for their money, which is a very good thing IMHO.

I agree with 95% of the above but its not IBM but MSFT that would be in Larry Ellison's sights.
The only beneficiary of the 1990s UNIX wars was MSFT.
Larry hates Bill and Steve.
SPARC, Pro*C and PL/SQL, WebLogic and/or Tuxedo isn't too bad a stack and a stack I have worked on in the past without too much grief.

Yep I've worked that stack also, it puts all the pieces in Oracles basket, which makes a heck of lot more sense then any other buyer. I'm interesting in seeing this play out over then 24-48 months.

Funny, in a way .... Oracle leaving Irix was probably what killed SGI. And now they've bought Sun ...

Wow. I didn't expect this.
Last I heard it was IBM and then suddenly BAM!, Oracle comes in and buys them.

I am not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing, time will tell but at least Oracle haven't been that brutal with the products they've collected along the way: For some reason I was looking at TimesTen documentation and found a big section about Tuxedo integration. Doing Oracle database and Tuxedo whatever else stuff might get a little tighter integration/support on Solaris. At the ISP I am currently at, they complain about Oracle support being far worse than SUN. You'd have to talk to BEA, TimesTen and other employees how the transition went to really know what the acquisition means I guess..
