I just hunted for the best deal on an LSI 1064 card I could find. Bought one, it worked.
It's great. Only thing I use the firewire for now is maybe backup and the CF card reader. The SATA cf card reader I bought doesn't work but when I checked out the reviews, seems that it is not reliable under Windows either, so ..... someone else will come up with a working one to try later on, I am sure.
SATA card is the
way to go for cheap large storage. Firewire does work but it's a pita. I'm using the scsi disks for system and executables the sata for large, less accessed storage. ( /usr/people/me ) Doesn't seem slower than the scsi disks in desktop use. Probably a different kettle of fish for a server.
