They're coming to take me away hehe! For compiling GCC

I am compiling GCC 4.7.4 on my O2...and.....I need a beefy Origin. This is my second go because after 689 minutes it crapped out because of a f**king leading / in a path on my ./configure command. So...here we go again. And my other O2 still isn't happy and I am sooooo bored and hopped up on RedBull :P

Does it look as impressive as compiling gcc?

Apparently if you can post brony memes then you're doing pretty good!

Well it's only been 6 hours....we'll see what my mental state is like after another 11 hours :p

The nekochan wiki article on compiling GCC said it took the author 2 hours on a 16 processor Origin 3400....so I can't imagine how long this will take on a single 180Mhz O2 :p

As far as compilation goes you're probably looking at at least a day. Compiling GCC on my old Tezro took around 12.

Oh yeah. It's going to take a long time, but I think it will be worth it.

It's UNIX.....I know this! In my senior year in High School, I had to do a presentation for a class, and I didn't bother preparing it. I took trusty Indigo, loaded up fsn and asked "Does anybody remember Jurassic Park?" Class goes fucking wild like "It's UNIX". Yes...yes it is. Ended up getting an A+ on the presentation with absolutely zero work. If it were just a retarded PeeCee, I doubt I could have pulled it off. But it was an SGI!

Hindsight 20/20, I could have just compiled GCC and been like "I'm hacking the MATRIX!" and gotten my diploma just for that alone....long as it's on an SGI...anything is possible :p How's that for the "song and dance machine"?

Yup. It's still going :p And going and going and going. But it will be worth it when I get pidgin working with the twitter plugin and tweet "Tweeting from my SGI machine!"

If it weren't for a web browser, I could easily make IRIX my daily driver, which I would love. When I had my Indigo umpteen years ago, it was my daily driver for a quite a while.

I've gotten increasingly disgruntled with Firefox and fuck Webkit, so eventually I imagine I'll eventually fund development of an alternative web browser engine. If anyone here had the expertise to take the last non brain damaged version of Gecko and build an fltk or fox toolkit browser around it, I'd be all over it. For a JS engine we could use the Firefox version but strip down and integrate no script into the system so that we could only activate it when it's absolutely necessary

I wonder how hard it would be to port the Haiku web engine to IRIX. I _think_ it's its own little thing, and it's speedy as all get out.

I'm still using Firefox by way of Pale Moon, but even that can only strip out so much of the bullshit. I'd love for there to be a decent alternative browser out there - seems like all the alternatives these days are either Chrome wannabes or so bare-bones they don't include proper adblocking or JS whitelist features.
