Porting of openrw (Open Source Rewrite of the GTA3 engine) to IRIX

Unread postby eudatux23 » Mon Jul 04, 2016 10:19 am

Hi everyone,
I stumbled across this very interesting project: https://github.com/rwengine/openrw

It's an open source rewrite of the engine of Grand Theft Auto 3. It would be really cool to get this running on IRIX.

Could someone please try to port it? :)

Thanks!

That would be cool, but the OpenGL renderer uses shaders--way too new for IRIX.

Thanks for your reply!
Would it not even start or would it just be slow? Maybe a V12 could do it?

Is there no way to disable or fake the shaders? Sure it might end up like Garry's Mod with fullbright but the proof of concept would be cool.

What about OpenGTA? I'm not familiar with the project but it might be better suitable for our machines.

OpenGTA is just the 2D GTA variant. GTA3 however is 3D.

It depends on what the shaders are actually doing. If they are only/mostly implementing the equivalent features in the fixed function pipeline, then it should be possible to backport it to opengl 1.2. But I doubt the used feature set is so small, and such a rewrite would require a good knowledge of the opengl api (and probably some clever tricks).
